plastic paint?
plastic paint?
what sort of product can you use on our interior pieces that will give the plastic a newer updated look?
i've tried painting my interior pieces several different ways and beyond just getting the stock results it's too glossy or just stock looking.

2 kinds.
krylon fusion and sem
sem is more of a factory look and krylon has limited selections but is glossy until you armor all it a few then it'll dull down a bit and be factory look almost.

Jeff, what products have you used thus far?

I used krylon too and yes it was very glossy.
After I armoralled mine a couple times it wasn't as glosy but still had gloss appearance to it and stil had the rich black luster to it like a freshly done paint should have.
SEM paint is great paint. If you don't want a full out blinding shine and just factory look sem's the way to go I got a can of red it matched my interior perfect and blacks nice as well it matches black factory plastic perfectly.
jim85iroc (hope that's right) done his montior holder in sem black matches the housing under it perfectly.
I think you'd be better off getting sem

well i tried the spray can paints of all sorts....without the results i wanted. the type of look i want is that of molded plastic, almost as if it doesn't look painted which is rather difficult.
i have also tried basic automotive paints. i have ppg flat black on it now and it's just so glossy....alsa corp makes a paint that give anything a satin feel. i think i may try that unless i can come up with another option.

flat black?
and its glossy?
that's weird lol maybe you shouldn't armor all it.
It's weird if its glossy and it being flat black every flat I ever used was like black primer.

On a different note, the new GTO uses a lot of stretchy velour kinda looking material that is apparently glued over the plastics, under the dash, armrests, etc. It looks very nice and gives the interior a plush and very finished appearance. You should check one out if you get the chance.
...just another idea. Probably not much more expensive that going through endless rattle cans.

After useing the SEM products on mine I'm sold. Just be sure to buy everything since it's a 3 step process, kinda pricey to do right, but end results are exactly what I think your looking for. Looks factory satin until you armor all it then it shines. The shop I bought my stuff at offered about evey interior color the factory had out with the newer cars.

I got mine at my local autobody part supplier. I'm sure if you have one of decent size in your area they will carry it too. The guy that painted my car recommended it and I guess their shop exlcusively used this product when repairing cars. Would think they'd just get new parts, but I guess what we dont know wont hurt us
First I had to naturally wash all the parts with soap and water, then the first step was their degreaser type spray that removed all the years of armor all, finger grease, and mold release agent. It literally makes the peices look dried out- like your hands look when using a parts washer with good solvent. Then 2nd step was a spray can that opened up the pores of the plastic so the when you applied the color it actually went into the plastic instead of sitting on top like auto store paint. Had everything hung in the garage so it looked like a plastic "meat locker" but everybody that seen the after result was impressed of the factory look when it was done. I can say I'm very pleased with the durability of this product to date also. Only have a year on it, but still looks great! I think I had right around $100 in materials when all was said and done. All I had to paint was the a pillar plastic, door sills and plastic in the backseat/rear of the car to match the dash/console/door panels.
I have used the automotive parts store stuff years ago when I was in HS with not so great results, then a buddy did his malibu last summer with this auto store stuff with so-so results, but the finish it left just made it stand out like "look at me-I got spray painted" where this SEM product you cant tell it's ever been painted when your done.

I used sem but i never done any 3 stage process on em but I'd definately say washing them and degreasing would be a must prety much.
I never used the spray like primer to open it up I just went from wash/degrease to appling the paint and it went right on dried really quick and bonded on nicely.
