Body work and 3 complete paint jobs on my '86... all rattle can though, and in the open. OEM color was charcoal metallic grey, which after 14 years of arizona sun was the equivalent of splotchy primer. Had nothing to lose on it.. if nothing else, I knew I could at least put a uniform coat of primer on her

Need a decent gun and a paint booth, and I'll probably turn out something that'll last more than 6 months.

Picture is of my third paint job, which I half-assed over the course of 3 days with minimal prep work (not even primer in most areas, so the black underneath shows through where I was running low on silver) ... I was bored.

...helped my dad with the 88 Camaro ( pic in sig) 5 years ago. I am repainting it this summer though.... replacing the crappy acrylic enamel paint on it now with a good clear/base paint... dunno what kind or exact color red yet though.

Project-ROC, your car is going to look SICK! Anyway, mind telling me what kind of paint supplies you had to buy to do it yourself?

Project-roc, It's a lot easier to do a good job when some let's you use a nice paint booth and all the equip to do it with huh? If I had that, I would have painted mine a long time ago. Maybe then I would have a respectable color on it instead of the (what some people call) the GIRL color!!! I don't think you would have the same good results doing it in the Gee-rodge!

Project-ROC, thats a super nice looking car you've got there

if i wasn't saving up my life savings for a 350 to replace my junk of a v8 i'd definately send it off for a super sweet paint job like yours.

:hail: props man,

Brandon

I had never painted before or done any body work...it took 2 months of sanding, bondo, etching primer....just to get it ready. I painted it in a booth rented for $100 for the weekend and painted the GFX and mirrors in the garage a month later....no difference....Rasberry Red Pearl (House of Kolor) with Sherwin Wiliams etching primary and sanding primer....3 coats of kosmic klear....WHAT A CHALLENGE

Thanks for all the comments guys, much appreciated!!! For those of you interested - I used a PPG BBC 9700 base, which has 3 good coats on it....and for clear I used a cheaper PPG version called Omni 161. It has 4 good coats - I put 4 on there because I knew I am going to be sanding and buffing at least 1 coat off...so to be safe, I sprayed an extra coat.

BTW all this work was done at a local community college....I am a 2nd year student there so my friend and I did all the bodywork our selves. I am pretty satisfied with it, it looks much better in person....but it's not too bad for a bunch of kids I'm going to pick it up on Thursday and pay the bill on it.....Materials is all I am going to be charged for...which will be around 300-400 dollars. I can't complain, that's like peanuts compared to what a real shop would charge for a complete paint job...I have many pics of the whole process that I'll load up on a cardomain site so you guys can look as you please.

Car: too many ...
I've done it once on my 89 IROC. Didnt turn out too well since the neighbors called the cops on us while we were painting and we were disrupted while applying the 3rd coat of color. In Hawaii its completely legal to paint two of your own cars a year in your own garage, but the neighbors were just being punks. We waited for the perfect day and did it in our garage (with tarps). So my first try was ruined. The next car I plan to paint is my 89 RS but this time I'm going to rent a booth for $50 from a friend. After that, I plan to repaint my 89 IROC again. I plan to practice with metallics and pearls on an extra 88 SC chassis I have. I'm having the hardest time with spraying clear, so I need more practice in that area. But the good part is I'm getting really good at body work (hours, days, weeks, months hehe)!

Spdfrk1990, or cats....

my neighbors cat walks all over my car at night, come out in the morning and there's paw prints on the hood and scratches down the door. Could just imagine getting mine all painted and wake up the next morning and a cats been on it.

damn cats.
