Couple ?'s on filling holes & primer
Im going to be filling the holes for the original 3 piece spoiler since I now have a high rise. I am going to be doing it myself using body filler and the metal screen with an adhesive backing. Should I put the metal screen on top of the hole or just put it behind the hole? Or should I do both?
I will probably primer those areas and a couple other things like my rocker gfx and my rear bumper cover since I am getting my car painted in like 2-3 weeks. I dont have a spray gun so unfortunately it will be by spray paint. Is there anything wrong with primer in a can? Would I also need to get primer sealer? And should I primer my car before getting it painted? Thanks for the help.

I wouldnt use the metal screen. I would go out and but some fiberglass sheet and resin and use fiberglass. But either way be sure to "dent" in around the hole s you have some area to put the filler. Otherwise it will "pancake" or crack.

the right way to do it would be to have the holes welded. if you're getting it painted anyway, see what the shop would charge to do those. if you don't have access to a welder, and the shop charges to much, then i would go with fiberglass like 89305RS said. make sure you sand down to metal a few inches around the holes, so you're not putting any filler over paint. if you're going to fix it a few weeks before they paint it, you're gonna need to cover it with something. since it's not that long a time, spray can primer/paint should protect it fine for the time being, but i would make sure that you or the shop removes it before it goes in for paint.

I dont like welding in a hole fact being is that if it gets too hot the metal will warp and have waves in it visable when painted. Also youre flirting with a new back window when you weld near it. Constant heat changes can shatter glass. But yoes it would be better to weld but fiberglass is just as good.

Ok since I dont have access to a welder and would rather put the money towards the actual paint job I will probably go the fiberglass route like you guys said. If I went the fiberglass route do I just apply that on the outside of the hole or inside/both?
Im trying to do as much prep work as possible to cut down on the cost of the paint job. Do I need to primer my whole car or do I just need to rough the paint up?

1. you have to sand all of the paint off to bare metal!!
2.ok say this is your hole (no pun intended
)
__ __
3.You want to "ding" the rim of the hole to make it "dip" in like this:
__ __
\ /
4.Then you want to mix the resin according to the directions.
5.put it around the rim and inside the "bowl"
6.cut a peice of the glass to about 1" too big for the hole
7. put the peice in the hole pushing around it and INTO THE HOLE you do not want it to be flush at this point.
8.let it set up overnight
9. sand it smoothe with an orbital sander
10. fill bowl with filler or fiberglass filler
11. sand smoothe again
12. primer and your done!!

Fiberglass would be better because if you used the metal mesh.. that mesh could begin to rust from underneath .. and then you would have hidden cancer.

I think the mesh that hes talking about is the mesh that comes in the bondo kit. I believe that its aluminum. But great point though.

Nice work man
I want to shave mine too. What did you do with the antenna? So did you just put a fiberglass mesh over the hole and fill with filler?

If you are going to use filler only (which, provenly on commercial steel doors, works very well and last despite opinion of the method), use Z-grip (if available) made by Evercoat.
Do the normal filler prep to the outer surface and, if you can, rough the edge of the hole (with a file or whatever).
If you can, rough the back side of the hole as well (not a 100% needed step as Z-grip sticks to just about anything).
Place 2.5" masking tape (or make a wide strip from smaller pieces... doesn't have to be masking tape either really) over the backside of the hole.
Firmly press (important) the filler into the hole and then smoothe out as per normal using body filler.
Let cure (the longer the better for shrinkage purposes) and level.
Prep as per normal for paint.
After finishing prep.. remove backing tape and seal (paint, cold galv, galvaprime, epoxy primer, etc.) the exposed filler.
It's superficial to dimple the metal around the hole but, it doesn't hurt either as it is a little extra bonding area for the filler.
Just my opinion though.....

I removed the antenna bracket and pulled the wire out of the car. I was going to take the wire off the bracket and put the wire with a mini antenna that they sell at pep boys or whatever inside under the dash so i'd have some sort of antenna if i ever wanted to listen to the weather forecast of something . But when removing the wire from the bracket i accidently cut it. So i won't be doing that until i get a chance to pick one up at the junkyard.

Ok, I filled one side and put some spray paint primer on but the areas that have fiberglass stand out. Will that go away or how do I fix that? Will more layers of primer make fix that?

I kept sanding until the top layer of resin that i put over the fiberglass was about level then i put some glazzing putty over it. If you are going to add some putty be sure to sand down that primer first.

It has to be FLUSH with the metal no question. Otherwise you WILL have a pancake on there. MAKE SURE IT IS FLUSH!! Find a straightdge or something. Make sure it dosent stick up from the metal.

Here's the finished product. The clear is still wet in this though so it'll look better once it's dried. I'll take a new picture tomorrow.

Lol, that's awesome. I've never been able to get a reflection of myself in a picture of my car. I can't wait to see what this'll look like all wet sanded and buffed.

Well I put some primer on and I answered my question
Just need to put on some more coats so you wont be able to tell there was a hole there. I cant wait to get my car painted!
3gc, when you filled in your antenna hole did you put the fiberglass cloth patch on the bottom of the hole? Is it hard to reach that area?

First i used a ball peen hammer and lightly bent the area around it down then I put some resin over the hole, then the cloth, then more resin. I didn't do a perfect job either, so their might be a better way. When looking at it from the rear at about eye level you can see where the hole was but that's the only time. I'm happy with it for now though.
