That's not the hood. That's the ugly version of the Ram Air 1 hood. American Sports Car Designs makes the hood pictured.

Unfortunately, The good looking ASCD hood is nonfunctional and the not-as-attractive Suncoast Creations hood is functional! Does anyone know of a RA1 hood that looks like the ASCD but is functional like the Suncoast Creations?!?!

I think those are the only two RA1 hoods. The 'good' RA1 hood could probably be made funtional. Im' sure some of the people who have it have made it functional.

Well Ive heard that the ram airs gotta be high to collect the air. I watched some kinda special on tv about the gtos in the 70s and how the ram airs werent functional because of their height.

Maybe those could be functional though since they are lower on the hood...The air would actually get into it. I think the show was saying that the air jumps up after it hits the front swirls on the hood and if theres a cowl goes in that way.

Air may not get forced into the opening on it's own, but being open and having the filter there will allow cold air to be sucked in on a short direct path. Where my air filter is now, it's tucked behind the headlight near the fender... i figure if i shorten the distance that air travels to the intake and place it outside the engine compartment, it's an improvement. I'd love to see pics of the ASCD hood made functional and a description of what was required. I'll probably post another thread asking about it specifically

I am not trying to start any debates about this, but I figured I would add something to the "ram air" idea. The "ram" effect won't happen on a car, you can't go fast enough. The "ram" effect works on jets. You should just think of it as a freer entry path to air, and possibly cooler as well. But no ram. We probably all know this by know, but just in case someone comes along and reads about it. That way they don't get misled...

Later

PS, I just really like the look of the "ram air" hoods, that why I bought one for my 'maro...

yea, I realize the ram air is just a name and not truely what happens... I carefully worded what I said above because of that Mostly, it is the look that I like. But if i spend the money on it, I might as well get a sweet looking cold air induction setup out of it as well.

Not to add fuel to the fire, but its not really "ram air".

"ram air" is a selling gimmack from pontiac.

But it IS a very effective cold air intake.

But there is no "ramming" of any air going on.

I like the one ASCD makes and I agree that you could probably make it work... but I hate the one in the picture with the upmost hate you could have for a hood.
