Found bar under air box? What is this thing? (picture)

While removing my air box to clean it up I found this thing just lying around in front of the hood latch.

What is it? Does it belong there?

looks like a hood support, to hold the hood up when it's open......................?

maybe the previous owner got tired of using a stick to prop up the hood and snagged that off some other car. was it bolted on?

That's what it looks like to me, must have had some bad hood struts at one point.

It's definitely a hood support. Definitely not an original part of your car.

That looks very similar to the one I'm using on my Formula. It came on a parts car I got a few years ago, but I have no idea what it might have originally been installed on.

It's amazing what people will do modifying their cars and refuse to replace the hood shocks...:lala:

The hood support bar is not stock....

seriously, F-- replacing those $50 hood struts. If you can get something like that off another vehicle nearby, and have access to a drill and two bolts- you've just saved yourself $50.

actually i can get those struts for about $13 a peice, not a bad price, but the hood propping stick that seems stock on all 3rd gens works fine for me.

Just go get the struts. Hood struts aren't that expensive, and its VERY easy to replace them.

I don't see why people are soo adamant about not replacing them.

At $28 bucks apiece up here, a pair is almost worth a tank of fuel. Gotta prioritize.

because most people dont go under the hood often enough to rationalize spending 50-60 dollars to replace them.

plus that rod will never wear out like a new set of struts will

$24/each was the lowest I've seen

MIGHTY-LIFT
HATCH A95024 LLT $24.99

MIGHTY-LIFT
HOOD E95051 LLT $15.99

How often do the struts wear out exactly ? I know the OEM struts on my 91 were still working (barely but, still lift the hood slowly assisted)... that's what.. 13 years ? I paid $32 for another estimated 13 years service... doesn't sound that outrageous.

cmon people dont be so cheap, there not that expensive, i payed 18 each for mine, i must say its super cool not having to hold up your hood with a stick, once i put it on i couldnt stop opening and closing my hood, amazing how those things can hold so much weight, and plus they give you +5 hp

I'd think most people here do. I got so sick of trying to prop up my hood everytime I wanted to check or change something, the $45 I spent was probably the best I've dropped on this car so far. Same with the hatch struts. Nothing beats convenient upgrades. It's like keeping the AC on your car. I'll be damned if I'm going to spend what I like doing most (driving) while sweating my ***** off.

Hey, c'mon now! I like my 2 polished pieces of pipe! They fit one on either side on the outside of the seats. Looks like the forward bars of a 6 point cage at first glance! Left pipe fits the hood perfectly, right pipe fits the hatch perfectly! My wife instinctively knows which pipe to reach for, depending on which end of the car I'm heading to. Besides, if I got new struts, the kids wouldn't have anything to play with in the back seat, and nothing to bash me upside the head with while I'm driving down the road! And when I get my ride cherried out, I will have them chromed for shows! And discarding the worn out struts makes up for the added weight of the pipes, and makes access to stuff near the firewall easier.

:hail: custom hood supports!! :hail:

if you go to advance auto, they are lifetime warrenty. it was nice to get $100+ worth of lift supports for free (front and back). it was also nice not to get whacked in the head anymore by the hood when it was cold.

hahaha thats so funny, it could be a lesson too, half the people that have broken into my cars are drunks, usually leave bottle caps and stuff so it wouldnt be unusual for a drunk guy to get his head banged by the hatch,

They go bad gradually, unless they get punctured.

It's not a hood prop or anything like that. There are 2 of them that criss cross infront of the radiator in an X shape. I have no idea what they are for, but that's what it looks like to me.

This is definitely a hood prop. Those radiator cross braces don't look like that.
