The 91-92 Z28 HighRise vs. The Aftermarket HighRise's

Hey, I've been wondering something....
I've seen a few thirdgen's around with the highrise spoilers, and in all honesty I really wanted to like them but I didn't. I thought they were too tall and hoakey looking. Well yesterday, I saw a 91 z with the highrise and it looked good. I'm pretty sure it's the stock (oem) one 'cause it had the 91 gfx as well. Well, this made me think maybe the other few that I've seen were aftermarket ebay cheapo's.
Basically, what I'm asking is, is there a slightly large difference between the oem and the aftermarket high rises?

Worst case I buy one, and don't like it, and there's always someone out there to buy a high rise

And BTW, what's a fair price for an oem highrise?

as far as the looks...I don't think the aftermarket HighRise Spoilers look any different at all. They are just made cheaper...lighter weight...ect. A friend of mine is parting out a 1991 Z28 1LE and he is selling the spoiler for like $200 bucks, PM me if you wants his email address.

Also, if you plan on putting a 91-92 Z28 spoiler on a Camaro that has the 3 piece spoiler, you''ll either have to weld up the holes in the deck lid or change the whole hatch. Also, the holes in the quater panels will need to be welded up.

here is a rear picture of mine...

OEM high rise spoilers usually sell for around $150-$250. They can get pricey. 84customz, how heavy is your high rise spoiler? Mine is supposedly off a 91 Z but it doesnt weight that much.

Hmmm, well I'm really debating on which spoiler now
In the short term I want to put on the 91 style ground effects, front spoiler, and nice 17's with some low-pro's, with some drop to it as well.
With this setup, I believe the highrise looks a little better, but I'm not sure heh.
BUT, I guess it'd be cheaper for me to go with a highrise, as I have an '88 sc with no spoiler whatsoever. So I'd have to do MORE work to get a 3 piece ducktail put on than a high rise hehe. (drill the holes on the rear quarters and whatnot)

Well, I guess there's nothing wrong with getting one of the 85$ ebay aftermarket high-rises?

thanks a million for any help

The angle at which you see it is probably what's determining if you like the spoiler at that particular moment or not.

Yeah I think that's it. From behind, or from the side I think it looks dumb, but from the front 3/4 view it looks KILLER

I guess I'll go with the hi-rise, 'cause I want to get an SS hood and I guess the hi-rise would kind of even out the rear if you know what I mean.

And again, the ebay 85$ ones are good or not?

Yeah both those look good, especially the latter pic, that's where the hi-rise really looks amazing, that angle.

how heavy is your high rise spoiler
it's not heavy as lead....and then again..it's not light either. I used to have an 84 Z28 and I cloned it to a 1992 Z28. It's hard to explain but the OEM spoiler is made just a little different on the ends on the bottom side. They are enclosed and the aftermarket spoiler was open....atleast with the aftermarket 91-92 Z spoiler I bought for the 84.

One thing that I belive came up before is the width. My aftermarket Ebay spoiler does not go to the very ends of the fenders, it sits about 1/4 inch inward on each side. The OEM ones I belive are flush with the quarter panels. I dont have one to look at so someone else will have to answer that. Also the quality was not to good either once painted. It took some work to get it smooth looking and it still has a spot I aint too happy with but I will get over it! Try for a used OEM if you can.

Dude I have never seen a TA with the hi rise spoiler, and I like it! Looks even better on the TA than a Camaro LOL. I'm so doing that.

Good thing I can get one from my friend for like 50 bucks lol.

Just make sure you watch out for the shipping on those aftermarket ebay spoilers! the $85 ones seem cheap but check out the shipping. I got one off ebay with the LED third brake light and I am very happy with it.

Hey you got any pics of that spoiler? I want either the highrise with 3rd brakelight off of ebay, or the highrise with 3rd brakelight off of spoiler2000.com, but I don't know which one's better. (or maybe it's the exact same one hehe)

The aftermarket spoiler I bought for my 91RS is almost identical to the factory one on my 92Z. In fact,I just went out and measured them. The aftermarket one I got from Spoiler2000.com is about 1/4" shorter in height than the OE spoiler.

I didnt currently see any with the LED on ebay right now, but it looks identical to the one one spoiler2000.com I think I only paid 165 or so and that included shipping. it was pretty much the same deal as the $85 spoiler they sell on ebay, however the shipping for that one is $48 what a rip on shipping. I'll get some pics of my Z with the LED spoiler when its light out tomorrow.

Also, in my humble opinion I think the spoiler only looks good with the 91-92 style 'scoop' ground effects. I've seen a few running around with the 82-84 style ground effects or no ground effects at all and it just dosent seem to 'flow' right. it seems to give the car an awkward appearance, but hey thats just my opinion. I do, however like the way it looks on the TA/firebirds I've seen a few on this site and it really does look good on them.

I think they only look good if you have the full effect(91-92gfx and Z hood) altho it did not look bad on that firebird up above. And they are kinda wierd from behind but maybe it grows on you. I am thinking of putting one on my 92RS but only if I change to the 92z hood. Still deciding between SS or z28 hood but leaning towards z hood since car is a '92. I got to the spring to make a decision.

Where is this hood located on ebay?

Are they different sizes than the oem? Finding used ones around Chicago is pricey.

Awesome! thanks for the pics. And I actually think I'd like having the spoiler2000 one that is 1/4" shorter, as I think they're a little too high as it is

I think the one I got off ebay above was from spoiler2000.com if I remember right, I'll measure it tomorrow and get you some dimensions.

the high rise looks good from the side but from the rear its way too narrow. search for it theres a few threads that show pics of it it looks way funky from behind.
