Please help on wiring 4th gen dash!

88 TA dash upgrade to a 98 TA dash

I have done searches till I'm sick and I'm still not finding what I need for my application. I have seen so many posts of you guys doing this and getting everything for it to work, but I just don't seem to have that luck.

first the 2 3rd gen cluster wiring harnesses on my car is gray and brown, not black and white and the sequences are totally off.

The pop up lights aren't even close to whats listed either. I posted another help thread and got a couple schematics for wiring, so I tried figuring out what all the wires went to...found the hot in, , pop up, lights on, down, chimmer, running lights, and I can get all of it to work, but the down function. It WILL work, but I have to unhook the pop up wire. PLEASE shed some light on this...here's the thread:
https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...hreadid=258126

I know many have got all this stuff to work, so PLEASE help, and do not tell me to do a search because that is all I have done the last month.

I will be forever in debt:hail:

will post pics of my progree in a min too

This area (in green) of the heater box is in the way, and I'll have to adapt it to line up with the 4th gen ducting, but I have some ideas

This area where the column bolts to has to be cut out to allow the dash to slide back farther. also where the green turns left I need to notch out so the dash can slide to the pass side a lil more

Here is some pics of the new dash...not completed of coarse:

hey looks just like mine! Looks Great!!!! Started mine 3 weeks ago and am still doing it. But just doing a few things aday, takin my time. Maybe the 3rgen birds are differnt from the Camaro but I did not have that problem like you did with the column bolts. If I slotted them like you did on my Camaro, it would thrown the whole dash way off. My dash fits flush, like stock, on the pass side right now. I can move it to the drivers side more to even it out but it throws off the natural angle of the 4thgen dash. So Im going to keep it that way. If you need ideas on the a/c ducting, I got mine to fit perfectly sealed. Check out the link for pics.

page 4 http://www.cardomain.com/memberpage/127576/4

oh yeah, if you haven't already, to get rid of the gap between the console and dash and console gap under folding cup holder, stuff some towels or rags under the rug in those areas to lift the carpet and rid the gaps.

Heres a pic of mine from about a week and a half ago. Im pretty much been finsihed for the last 2 days, just hiding all the wires and ecm right now.

oops, didn't even see the first post up there. Idon't know what to tell you on the pop up headlight going down. Do you have a shop manuel for your car? I gave you the '98 switch diagram in the other post but for your problem you probably need the light motor diagram, ill see if I can get it for you.

I also had the gray and brown connector on my 3rgenn cluster harness. Ill get you the pinout for those and for the '98 4thgen cluster when I get a chance. Hopefully it wil be the same for your car or close. That should help alot if you don't already have them.

Heres a diagram of a '95 firebird cluster. I can't find the '98 I had but its basically the same as the '95. just some wire color differences, but that shouldn't matter since the pins all have the same function regardless of wire color.

I would really like to get my headlights working properly , so if you could fill me in on that I would greatly appreciate it!

also the trunk switch on the 4th gen has only 2 wires, but the 3rd gen has 4 wires...got any idea how thats supposed to be done?

John-
I was looking at your cardomain site, and I'm having a little difficulties decifering what exactly was cut on the ducting. would you mind posting the picfs w/a little description? possibly...maybe...???:hail:

thats a great start, I'll check it out tonight - thanks! I just looked through all my papers I printed out from these threads, and I don't seem to have the 4th gen (97+) pin layout. Did I miss it somewhere or has it not been posted?

Sorry I cant find any more diagrams for the headlights. Yeah for some reason my cardomain site wont let you click on the pics to make them bigger. I got some more detailed pics of how I cut the ducts and lined them up, but there on my camera and I ran out of batterys. As soon as I get some new ones I put those pics up.

edit; check here there may be something to help with the lights http://shbox.com/1/4th_gen_tech1.html

look at a few posts up at the link I put up before. Its a pinout for the '95 plug which should be the same as '97+ with the exception of a few colors might be different but the functions are the same.

This is the 4thgen airbox.
In the purple is how the big opeing looked originally. I cut this area to resemble the shape of the 3rdgen air box. I lined the boxes up side by side on the ground and marked the 4thgen bix where it needed to be cut to resemble the 3rdgen box. The tan line just shows that I slightly grinded down that lip by about not even an 1/8"

The green box is how the opening looked before I closed it off a little. Again I just compared the 2 boxes side by side on the ground. The 3rdgen opening in this area is not as wide so I had to close it up a bit as you see on the left of the green box. I just used some scrap plastic I cut off from the purple box and jb welded it to close the hole up a bit and then put some duct tape over it to hold it while it dried. On the right side in the green box I had to open this area up a little more and make a slant like the 3rdgen box has. I also cut out the bottom where you see the blue line. (!!!!do not cut the lip of the opening below that though in lite blue!!!!!) Just look at the 3rdgen box and you will see why. But when you do that just seal up the corners (red dots)

The last opening wasn't as big as the thirdgens opening as you can see it stopped where you see the yellow line. I had the cut the left side lips off and open it up a bit more, as much as I could, but dont cut into the area with the orange x to much or you will go right thru to the back of the box. Then I just used scrap plastic and jb welded new lips on to match the lips on the 3rdgen box ( in brown)

Basically I just kept comparing the 3rd and 4thegn boxes on the ground side by side. Then make slight cuts and hold the 4thgen box to the firewall box and see how it matched up then cut more if needed till it fit right. You will have to have someone hold the box in the car at the angle and height it would be if mounted on the dash, then go around from everyangle you can to see how its fitting then make more mods and repeat until you get it right. I got lucky and my first cuts were just about perfect so IU had it fittin in about 20 minutes.

Its not going to fit 100% to the 3rdgen firewall heater box. There will still be small small opeing that aren't perfectly sealed. I just used some foam from the back of an old underdash panel and glued strips to the new 4thgen air box and it sealed it. I now have a tight fit and seal.

Heres how I lined up the two boxes to compare them. Also The 4then box in this pic is the was just about finished minus the foam and the bottom right opening had to be covered a little bit.

in this pic you can see from the side in orange how much I cut of the big opening in comparison to the 3rdgen box below it.

Heres a pic I found with the foam being glued in. I didn't clen everything up or finish it when this pic was taken, so where you see green is where some more foam is supposed to be. The blue line foam is just to show all the foam that was glued to the outside of the lips. and the redline foam was glued to the inside lips.

I hope this is all helping out a bit and I hope Im not to confusing.

what would be the best dash harness to use for the 4th gen dash swap with the Lt1 firebird 150 cluster?

my car is an 89 i have a choice from an 89 camaro dash harness, an 87 camaro dash harness and a 90 camaro dash harness.

do the 90-92 camaros use a buffer box for the speedometer?
