i belive it could be a sway bar or a torch bar. i am almost positive that it prevent the frame from twisting, even though theres like 10 more of these through out the car.... anyways i wouldnt remove it cuz you can bend your frame or you may end up bending it and when you but it back in it could be bent. then your screwed unless you buy another....

i wonder if it has anything to do with strengthen the fender for the antena. since there is a hold cut it takes some strength out of that area and could be weaker on impact?

only thing that i can think of since it is only on one side. i also have that on my 85 z28.

The piece you speak of is called a strut tower brace. Its an aftermarket brace that is meant to keep the front end of the frame from flexing during hard cornering. I'd leave it on since the car looks like it has numerous other modifications well beyond stock.

The tiny brace outlined in the photo was a Camaro only part that was used on IROCs. Its purpose was to give added support to the fender sheet metal during right hand turns which account for most of the cornering during normal driving. I don't have the part number on that one.

I have only seen this bar on late model TPI cars. I have seen it on mostly '92 cars. I would have to say it is some sort of fender brace although it is only on one side. I bet you can get rid of it since there are millions or hard cornering 3rd gens out there without it.

I have one on my '85 Z. Maybe it's an additional stiffener for cars that have the power antenna? Just a guess.

My '83 Z28 has it too, so its not an IROC only thing for sure.

I think its probably just to help support the overhanging part on the top of the firewall.... you know, the lip that makes it a bitch to take out your distributor?

Its pretty flimsy, so I bet its a brace for that.

As mentioned earlier, it is a brace for the right fender.

It is a fender support brace. It is standard on all Z28's. 1LE cars, and many 91/92 TPI Firebirds.

It also goes with another brace going from the fender well in the engine compartment to the fender rail near the motor.

It is there to stiffen up the body.

It is there so that you have one more useless pos on your car that you need to tack off and trough in the dump.
