gauge cluster
i have a kid who want's to sell me a cluster from a 92 RS for $40. currently i have the stock cluster in my 85 sport coupe and i just wanted to know how hard it is to install the gauges from the RS in my car. He also said that he would give me all of the connections i needed.

I'm not absolutely sure on this, but I think the 90-92 cluster has a electronic speedo. This means you'd need to buy a convertor that your speedo cable would plug into.
...not sure about how the cluster actually fits...

Axle/Gears: ones that turn.
It's gonna take a lot to rewire everything to make the 92 cluster work.
Then there is the matter of getting it to fit....it's not a bolt-in job.
If you search, you'll find a few members who have done this.

only thing that will make a difference is if his is a guages cluster, and yours has idiot/dummy lights, or vice versa. Why do you want to swap to an 84 cluster? i'm familiar w/ birds basically, but the 84 cluster will most likely have the same 85mph speedo you have, probably same tach, maybe full guages, if that's the difference, then you'll be swapping out switches for senders (switches set of a light when an engine function reaches a critical value...aka to hot (light comes on) etc))
As far as the speedo goes, both will be cable, so that wnt be a problem, might be some re-wiring, but nothing that can't be done.

all i really want is a tach but i want to keep it in the dash. how mich will the senders cost since i will need them if i change clusters and will the 92 have all of the senders i will need and will they interchange with the ones in my car?

if the engines are the same, and you have access to the senders, they will definately plug in the same, even if it's just SBC to SBC, or 2.8 to 2.8 etc. There should be many people on here who've gone from a lights panel to guages, you'll have some rewiring ahead of you along with replacing the appropriate senders.
You'll have to hardwire your tach up into the existing wiring harness, then you'll need the oil pressure sensor, volts, and engine coolant temp sensors, and you should be good to go. Change those, run wires appropriately through your iwring diagram, and modify the connectors to the appropriate style. If you can get the wiring harness , or at bare minimum the plug in connector for the dash you'll be swapping to it'll make matters a whole lot easier, w/o it, the challenge won't be impossible, just impractical.

I took a Z28 cluster from an '86 and installed it into my '*% Sport Coupe. All you need is to go to the parts store and tell them you need the sending units for the oil pressure and coolant sensor. The oil pressure sits on top by the distributor, you will probably need some fittings to make it fit. The coolant temperature sender is on the drivers side on the head below the exhaust manifold. The tach, speedo, and gas gauge will all work once you plug in the system. It isn't very hard, if you get all the pieces from a donor car it will go easy. Make sure you get V8 for V8.
