about doing a K.I.T.T. conversion??? Anyone here do it before??

Hi,
recently i picked up an 82 firebird s/e sence i got it for a good deal i was wondering if i did deside to do the conversion to the knight rider kitt where is the most affordable place to get parts such as the nose and wheels and stuff. Seems anywere I look the stuff is WAY overpriced. Is there anywhere i should stay away from??
thanks

Check out Matt's, its still a work in progress, but I think its getting there for sure. There are a few others on these boards as well, you might want to try the button at the top right of the forums

jcurrieirocz:

whats up. check out these sites for more KITT info:

www.knightregistries.com
www.knightfoundation.net

the 2 suppliers i would recoment to get your parts from are:

www.adiautotech.com
www.roblouisell.com

email them both for information, they havent really updated their sites in a long time so they have more stuff that isnt on there, especialy rob louisell.

be carefull of used parts and stuff on ebay, there is a ton of incredibly bad quality parts out there. anywhere from bad fiberglassing to poor quality fit, to totaly inaccurate pieces.

I am building one myself. The knight registries and the knight foundation websites are great tools for people wanting to build this car. They have links to pretty much all the suppliers for the parts. They are not cheap but they are great products. You should check them out and see what all goes on there. If you care to take a look at my car I try to keep it detailed enough so people looking at it can get an idea of what to do if they want to follow what I have done. Mine is a little different than most but I wanted mine different. You should check it out. The scanner on there is gone right now because I am getting a better one than what I had. I will post it on my site when I get it.

AWSOME site!!

Love the car too... i like how theres lots of pics and detailed info! I try to do the same on my roc's page. Thanks for all the help that your site gave me.

Thanks to the rest of you guys too. I think I got my work and my wallet cut out for me with such a project. Not sure if i am ganna do it to the bird yet. The roc would have to take a rest on the back burner or get sold (opps i didnt say that out loud did I?).

spade- i was wanting to convert the exterior at least. The list for my particular car looks like:
1-Nose w/scanner and acc. lights
2-tail lights blacked out
3-wheels and caps
4-new paint
5-(maybe a hood swap, mines just a flat one)

I already have the seats (but they are grey)
also the dash is too expencive for me right now.

If you want a scanner I would probably go with this site to get it. It is actually the cheapest, besides a JC Whitney scanner, but it looks to be the best scanner available. I had Don Colie's scanner but I am now getting one through this guy. Can't wait to get it.

The KITT bumbers are fiberglass, not urethane like the factory bumbers so if someone backs into it or something like that it will more than likely crack it. Hope this helps.

I had an 83 TA I had converted a couple years back....Ill never do it again. One of the biggest mistakes Ive ever made. Not to mention, 80% of them never get completed. But, to each his own.

I just think its a waste of good money, and not to mention a waste of a car. Dont forget the ridicule youll get for doing it. Too many people laughing at you. Ive seen and heard reactions at car shows when people walk by. Sure, there are SOME people that will just plain love it. But the majority just see a guy that just spent a number of thousands of dollars to build a car that dosent have half the dollar value of whats been put into the car. Then theres the whole "geek, dork, nerd" stereotype that seems to go along with it. Dont get me wrong...I have every Knight Rider episode on tape, and piles of memorabilia from when the show was still being made that I collect. I like the show as much as any other fan does, but that is not a way I would choose to express my love for the show.

The car I converted was my old 83 Trans Am. Once I put it back to stock appearing with correct wheels and decals, I got ten times as many compliments and looks as I did with the KR junk all over it. The choice is yours...make it wisely.

Personally, as much as I like the idea of driving a Knight Rider lookalike, I'd like for it to be more functional than aesthetic. It's one thing to have a flashy car, it's another for the car to actually do things.

Hence why one of my goals for my carputer is to get some voice synthesis software on it, and then one of my long-term projects will be writing some interface software that can actually make sense of English and, hopefully, enable the car to have a conversation... Or psychoanalyze someone (ELIZA, anyone? )
