Quarter Panel availability
Quarter Panel availability
My son (sancho) and I are looking for a right rear quarter panel for our 89 IROC. The body guy that I am having fix this would like to have NOS if possible. Does anyone know of a place to get a NOS panel. I am also looking for a rear bumper cover and spoiler center section with brake light. we have some pix of the whacked rear end in this thread: https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...hreadid=259626
btw, we are in the Dallas/FT. Worth area
Thanks!!
Any input will be appreciated.

You don't need a new panel. That can easily be pulled out and filled. My convert had more damage than that at the same spot and it was fixable.

There's a palce in Indiana and online called 'The Paddock'. Not too badly priced neither. It just takes afew weeks to get a catlog out of 'em.

That's it? My car was worse than that when I got it and I did all the work myself with no prior knowledge about body work. Definately can be hammered out. Replacing a whole quarterpanel is a VERY expensive job.

NOS is new old stock...GM
Keystone may have a replacement OEM rear panels.
Joe got one from a junkyard. Battery powered sawzaw
Either way it can be alot of work. Pulling out the dent is not the prob. Its getting the body to look right again. Like the dent was never there. And the key being doing it w/o using a butt load of filler! Body man probably does not want to go thru the effort it would take to fill and get it perfect.

That doesn't look that bad...honestly, considering the amount of work it takes to replace a third gen quarter correctly, I'd take it to one of the paintless dent removal places. They might not be able to get it perfect (though the guy that did some work for me, Dale in Chatanooga...Bruce Hawkin's cousin...probably could), but they should be able to pull enough of it back out so that it could be fixed with a light coat of filler. Otherwise, you're looking at a day or two worth of cutting and welding.

gm discontinued their quarter panel in the beggining of this year. I spend all summer trying to get one and many places had it listed and I even ordered it from some for them to later tell me they couldnt get it. Looking at the picture I would reccomend fixing it as everyone else is saying but if you want a quarter have a junkyard torch one off with a good bit of excess on what you need and then take it home to clean up.

If you do get a junkyard one, make sure you can hold a magnet to the panels all over. Poor mans way to detect massive bondo repairs! Or buy a mill gauge. It measures the amount of paint/filler on a car thru magnatism...

You can get a mil gauge from most automotive paint/body supply stores, or from some of the online places. Some are fairly sophisticated, but a magnet will do the trick in a pinch. Just test it on known good steel, and get one that is just strong enough . Companies like Eastwood sell one too, I think they call it spot rot or something like that.
I have some pics of a quarter swap on my 87 TA...I'll try to get them uploaded sometime. I will say its a PITA to remove a junkyard quarter, prep it, cut the old one off, and weld in the new piece, but its not that hard; it took about two and a half days alltogether, with my dad and I taking our time. The main thing is to cut away as much of the external skin as you can (say, with an air chisel or cutoff wheel), so that you can see the internal bracing that needs to stay. Also, if they usea torch to get the old one off, make sure they cut off way more material than needed, since it doesn't take much at all to warp the panel .I used a cordless Sawzall (three batteries!) to get mine off, but I have taken a standard sawzall and a generator to a junkyard before to do the same thing. Just be sure you have a few good blades!
Hey - I appreciate everyone's responses. I did take it to a body shop and the guy there is confident that he can pull it out. The only reason that he said that he might want a quarter panel was cause when he looked at it the first time - it was in the dark and he never "really" intended to put on a panel - it was just plan B if he wasn't able to pull it out. I just spoke to him and he has the bumper cover pulled off and is ready to start pulling it - he feels like it is going to "come out nice 'n purty". Hey we will post a pic after he finishes it. Thanks again for all the replys!!!
