Ok, I was a little dismayed to see this shortly after I bought the car. Never seen anything like it, and I have no idea how I might go about fixing it.. ideas?

no telling.

Yep that's what I figured. The rest of the car has new paint, and there is some evidence of rust in other places, but it's not nearly anything like this.. I dont think it's a big deal, so I will probably just leave it..

Almost everything with rust starts out as no big deal... next thing you know your replacing metal around the strut towers.

I would nip it in the butt while it's still a small spot. It would be easier to fix it up now than waiting acouple years.

---EDIT---
Here's a quick post I grabbed on rust removal. https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...hreadid=187405

Lots of others you can find using the search.

Basically though I say fix it before it spreads, unless you don't plan on having the car that long.

That rust is from water comming in through your hood vent next to the fender (they rust out faster on driver side-- especially if someone dripped some brake fluid there first). But do get it fixed, it will spred fast if you dont. Make sure to get all the rusted metal cut out and weld in new.

I saw rust in the same spot on my parts car and it started on my 84 TA also, got it taken care of when the engine compartment was repainted. I'll bet that the rust continues all the way down into the tight corner under the bulkhead. in fact, in the picture you can see leaves, dirt and other stuff that's settled into the corner. Dirt + water in a tight space = rust. Definitely clean it out well and see what's going on down there. Try to get it fixed quickly or you'll end up with a hole the size of your fist in there! that's what my parts car had. gotta find the picture i took of that.......

lol...

Well I cleaned out most of the leaves, and I found no more rust anywhere, and I even checked under the driver front ground effect (that I recently tore on the bottom) and there was no rust either, so I think I'll be ok if I can just take care of this one spot for now...

It appears... that it was caused by whomever installed your alarms siren there. They didn't protect the whole that they drilled, and years of driving have taken advantage of their install. Too bad, the rest of the car look pretty good. It's all about preventative maintainance.

Yeah, it's tough to tell. I think you're exactly right, Cruzin Kaz.

I dont know much at all about this thing's history, but the interior is SUPER clean, save for some odd rips in the carpet, and the exterior has a crappy paint job, but I dont care. The body's good. I'll have to show you guys a pic of the inside of the RR fender some time.. I think I remember seeing some rust there, as well as in the bottom of the doors, but nothing major. Little grinding and a good coat of paint and most of it should be just fine.
