Interior Trim Restoring

Is it possible to restore all the black plastic interior trim that seems to have become faded over time? Thanks

I repainted all my interior with Krylon Fusion. It came out very shiney but that was the look I was going for. It was very easy to paint if you take your time. I can try to get some pictures of it from the garage if the snow stops sometime.

I am currently restoring all of my tan plastic interior. It had been sun dried and faded with that chalky coating on the top. I started by shaving away all of the chalky surface with a large knife to get down to fresh plastic. I then sanded is smooth with 150 grit paper. After that I wet sanded with 220 grit, 330 grit, 400 grit, and then 600 grit. Then I buffed it with some plastic polish, and then rubbed it down with a paper towel. I have done about half the pieces in the car like this so far and they look amazing, they dont have the rough "grain" from the factory but I kinda like it better. If you need to replace the carpeting on the panels I suggest some of the special carpet for covering speakers and stuff which has a lot thinner backing, it is much easier to work with and comes out looking cleaner. Good luck, its a PITA but its worth it in the end and you dont have to spend $600 on all new plastics.

Does anyone know how to restore, or know where to get a replacement for this foam/weatherstrip stuff attached to the A-Pillar?

This is what I did...

I did this to mine I copied this text from another thread I made. Sadly I don't have the picutures anymore because I don't have my webspace anymore.

Some of the pieces in my console were cracked and the little screw ears were broken or badly cracked. I found some that were in better condition than the ones in my car, but they still needed a little attention. They were faded and could use some refreshing. I took my console apart and cleaned it very very well with some purple power. I let it soak in pure concentrated purple power and brusehd the little crevices with a tootbrush and got all the grime and gunk off. After I rinsed them well and let them dry I cleaned them with a serface prep cleaner that is suppose to remove oils and other contaminates off and allows paint to stick on better, I found at Home Depot. I cleaned it as per the container's instructions and I put on some rubber gloves to not get any of the oils from my hands on the pieces. I then sprayed on a couple coats of Bull Dog paint adhesion promotor and let that dry. I followed by painting with Plasti Kote bumper paint in black semi gloss. On the can it said it was for flexible and hard plastics such as trim pieces and bumpers so I figured it would work well with my console. I sprayed on about 3 coats and these are the results. Once they were dry I tried to scratch the paint off and it wouldn't that paint it stuck on there good.

So I used paint prep cleaner from Home Depot, it came in a tin container like paint thinner, but had an orange label. The Bull Dog Adhesion Promoter and Plasti Kote Bumper Paint I bought at Pep Boys.

This was 6 months ago and the paint hasn't chipped or scratched at all.

Re: Interior Trim Restoring

I recently restored all the black plastic parts of my interior and they turned out great. BTW, I learned many of these techniques working on my 55 Buick, and those parts were much more rare than on my 85 z28, so the key is, RUN A TEST! Ok, keep in mind that on auto plastics, (or anything on a car) a combo of grime and oil gets on everything over the decades, and it hardens and becomes a de-facto yellowed varnish.

1. On black, soft and hard unpainted plastics... rinse with water, then smear SoftScrub evenly on the part. It is important to rinse then smear so you don't develop spots. then, work with a soft-bristled brush in circular motion, getting the grime to release. Once you are satisfied that it is clean, dry it carefully and it should look great. It is now ready for a light coat of armorall. It will look nearly new. NOTE, do not use the softscrub, which has bleach, on colored parts. They'll splotch and bleach unevenly.

On colored soft plastics/vinyls, repeat the same process as above, but instead of SoftScrub, use OxyClean.

Hope this helps.

Re: Interior Trim Restoring

When I was redoing the 82 berlinetta I had, I had to replace most all the interior pieces and I got them from ebay. So as you can guess they were all different colors. I needed them red to match everything else so I took simple green and cleand them up and rinsed them with plain water and wiped dry, I went to wal mart and got krylon interior paint in red, I sat the pieces out in the sun as well as the paint (texas sun) in about 30min to 1 hour I went out and shot them the I let them set in the sun for a few more hours to sun bake the paint. 2 coats total. They looked brand new, I re did every piece on the car to match the color and nobody could tell I did it that way untill I told them.
