DIY Carpet replacement

If I don't want to spend a ton of money on new molded carpet to replace my stock rugs and I'd rather take the creative and cheap route...what kind of carpet do you all recommend I get? I was looking at the standard indoor/outdoor stuff at Home Depot recently, wondering if it could work. Might not be too stiff, though. I've seen mentioned in these threads a type of carpet to cover stereos. I don't know anything about sound...what is this material and where could I find it? Is it strong enough for a floorboard?

If anyone has tried this approach I'd really appreciate your input. I haven't found a step by step tech article on this...but please advise if you know of one somewhere. thanks.

i went the cheap route using rolls of black carpet from walmart underneath the floor mats. i had to remove the seats and the radio, and console to do it.

mind you this is only the front section not the rear. the carpet doesnt lay flat and i had to cut and fold it in several spots. most of the imperfections are hidden by the floor mats, seats, console, and a flimsy black mat i got right by the carpet to cover the area between the rear seats. this is a temp solution to really ugly and degraded carpet.

when i get the $$$ i am getting the molded carpet. oh and vaccuming is a pain the carpet keeps getting sucked off the floor and you have to tip the hose to keep it from doing that. i say just get the molded carpet and only do this once.

hit a boneyard and see if they have any, it might be pretty cheap there and it will be molded. and it might be in very nice condition, and it would be less of a hassle

you can get a front carpet molded for about 100.00 how much cheaper is the crappy stuff? add you time and the strong posibility that it will look like crud when done and need to be changed again the 100.00 is the cheap way to go.

what this guy said is what i am trying to say having done it this way. dont bother you will just end up getting molded carpet later.

no i didn't glue it down since i didnt know if i liked it at the time and now its kind of pointless to glue it since i will be ripping it out for a molded set.

got my new black front carpet for christmas (stereo makes the rear cargo part unnecessary) and my advise is save up for the molded carpet (like $120 from Ebay A-1 or something) trust me youll be happier in the long run

I got $200 worth of carpet from Yearone through a friend and it was JUNK. Didn't lay right and the rear didn't even fit. I sold it on ebay for much more than I paid for it and got front and rear from a junkyard for $65. The guys said they were crushing the car in a few days so a friend and I went and had fun ripping apart that car, too. For the amount of work I say do it once the right way.

I really need a good parts car, but I have no where to keep it. every time I hit the boneyard the stuff I need (interior and a good 305 TPI engine, have been ripped to shreds or there's a puddle of water on the floor/seats and they look horrible anyway). based on the feedback, I'm going to keep my eye on ebay, etc. for carpet removed from an actual car but I'll also look at anything that seems promising.

I appreciate the input, guys.
