Not too far off...
clean and degrease
grind or blast existing rust
fill any pits or weld holes
ETCH...and this is a biggie, It will give you your hold out
prime with a good 2k primer
sand, wax and grease remover, tack off, and refinish
Your choice trim black or body color.

Etch is just what it implies...It etches the metal for adhesion and maximum holdout. It has body and is essentially an acid.
The precursor was the Epoxy primers, and wash primers.
Some are two part, some are spraybomb

The first step WAS remove the center bar from the car, right? I hope you're not trying to re-paint it on the car.

I agree with what lonsal and the others said but be sure to ad flex aditive to your paint I didnt and not long after I started driving my car again found a crack in the paint around a screwhole maybe I overtightend the screw or the lift that occurs at speeds did it but it is messed up now

you don;t need flex agent that is for plastics. you had an adhesion issue or paint to thick.

Powdercoat it. After the requisite sanding that is.

I'm strongly considering glass-bead blasting mine and having it powder-coated. The only down-side is that the finish appears to be a satin black instead of gloss black. If it was gloss black I could send it with one of my regular batches to be powder-coated and save on a minimum lot charge. There are some other parts that appear to be satin black also, so I'll gather them up and send them all at once.
