COMPLETE floppy column article in Camaro mag!

That's right! Don't know if anyone has picked this one up yet, but DO IT!

Camaro Performers magazine, Feb 2005. There are many articles in there, and one of them is a step by step (each with a picture) on how to fix the floppy tilt column!

Figured I'd throw that out there.

whats the issue again? is it that the column will not stay firm when locked as in it has some wiggle room? or just all out no latching at all??

The wiggle problem. Or in my case, the wheel-doesn't-even-feel-attached problem, where the high beams and directionals don't work unless you hold the column up.

just make sure whatever you do dont break off a tilt steering pin remover screw inside the tilt stearing pin, those pins are hardend steel, i ground down 3 carbide steel bits trying to get that SOB outta there and never even scratched the damn thing. And i'd reccomend loc-titeing the loose screws in there so you dont have to go back in later, just remove them one at a time, and loc tite them when you put them back in.

I had that problem in my Iroc. It got REALLY bad, like when I would take tight turns the column would just lock and the car would die, almost got me into a couple accidents. That was NOT fun. Id suggest fixing it as soon as you can. I just swapped the whole column out though, only took me an hour and a half by myself, and a few busted knuckles but oh well. Would have taken half the time easily if I had an extra person around.

We need a "tighten up your steering" tech article that covers everything from the steering wheel to the wheels.
Just about every 3rd gen I've driven has had floppy steering in one form or another.

Anybody have any ideas or suggestions as to how to get the pivot pin back into the column?

I was thinking C-clamp or something similar

i have had to do this twice, i have it down to a frickin' science almost, can get it done in like 30 mins. it's such a pain in the butt though! mine was caused by never tilting the steering wheel up to get in and out and always hitting it while getting in/out. also, i used to drive around with no p/s pump with a p/s box. after i put the p/s pump back on and started tilting the wheel on a regular basis, it doesn't loosen up anymore.

Not sure of the brand and it was $22. The Napa guy looked it up in his catalogue.

Re: COMPLETE floppy column article in Camaro mag!

Need to go back into the column and make sure the upper bearing support isn't either missing or not seated properly. It's the gold-colored ring that goes under the lock plate spring. It should be pushed as far as it will go into the upper shaft bearing. And make sure that none of the ball bearings have come out of the upper bearing as well.
