interestign 4th gen dash idea
i noticed that a lot of poeple have trouple wiring up the speedometers and other dash gauges. woudl it be possible to hook up autometer guages or some other aftermarket brand in place of the 4th gen stock guages? i think this might be a good idea, and coiuld look really nice with a good custom job. any thoughts?

if u search longer u might be able to find more than one, but i did know i had heard of this before, infact, had thought of doing it for my setup too, as i have an 85 which is pre-electric speedo. but the price went waaay up.

ive since sold the autometers and hooked up stock gauges. all of them are working, and i think it gives a nice appearance when changing the dash. ive also done stock cd player and a air bag wheel as well.
much cleaner, IMO.
making stock gauges work isnt that hard.... you just gotta research and spend a bit of time wiring things up.
ill have pics up this weekend of the new setup.

hehe, don't i know. good job, i think the autometers have the abiity to give a neat look, and a "hot'rodded" look, but, the stokies do fine for me....if i only had my speedo working. ah nevermind, if i only had the car working.
Yeah it could be done, and with the right guages it could look great. But like Jeff said, its not gonna look OEM. Just depends on what you want I guess. I recently came across a '00 Camaro dash and I decided to save it for my 89 IROC-Z. Whenever I do get around to that mod I plan to use Autometer guages instead of the OEM 4th gen guages. But mainly because I want the guages to be configured a certain way so that I can see them through the steeringwheel (at a glance) while drifting. Just make a plate to mount em in, cut the holes for the guages in whatever configuration you want. Make sure the guages are backlighted so you can see em at night.

here is a pic of my template i used for the gauges.
i just gutted the cluster, then bolted the plastic in place of where the circuit board used to be.
fairly simple.
LMK if you have any questions.
its been gauge central at my place here lately. we just did my buddys 96 ss vert thats been carbed with autometers, and it turned out AWESOME.
