Project update: Off to the paint shop

I finally decided that my black/primer gray/white/red/green/maroon/blue paint scheme has to go. I have enlisted the professional skills of jay92,85,79 from the boards to get the thing done in time for Thirdgen Fest '05.

Here is a pic taken on Saturday afternoon when the flatbed dumped it off at jay's. I had already removed the engine/trans and everything on the firewall:

By the end of Saturday night, this is what the car looked like- no doors, fenders, headlights, bumpers, engine wiring harness, etc:

The antenna is getting shaved and the flush door handles are finally going to be finished. The color is going to be Corvette Admiral blue (like the Grand Sport Corvettes). I'll update the thread as progress continues...

nice, i know mine is going to jay's in a month after i finish up all the wiring for everything from the fuel pumps(2) to nitrous, etc. gotta put in a line lock as well, then it's off for paint when i'm done wrenching and scratching the car. I'm sure i'll see that one over there soon enough. good luck on it.

That Corvette blue should look pretty sweet. I can't wait to see your car with some paint. Good luck with it- it appears as though you are going to win our little competition of seeing who can have their car painted first. I'm happy for you though, and hopefully I'll have some new paint within the next month.

Yep. My problem is that I don't know how to weld. My brother is a good welder though, so the new doors are at his house waiting for us to trim the donor handle sections to fit and then he'll tack them into place. Jay is going to finish-weld them and do the bodywork. I'll post pics as it all happens.

82firebird: You might win after all if yours is painted in a month. Good luck with yours as well and post pics.

Sweet, I too just sent my car to get painted. Was picked up today so hopefully by sunday it will be done.
Getting it painted Torch Red, which was the brightest red at the paint store. No more white hood for me.

Me either after 6,7,8 beers

Best of luck to him.. welding on this thin 20ga door metal is a headache from hell for any welder... even if it is just tak welding
I'll certainly be interested in seeing the color turnout as I am in a serious personal debate of ditching the white on mine and going with a (undecided) blue/silver gfx scheme.

The metal on these cars is a lot thicker then say a kia.Man try welding a quter on one of them. If it only warps your lucky. Most of the time u blow holes in cuz the time u get a pudle going u blow through. I hope some day (soon) i will get a tig welder. I'll have to post a pic I have this heat sink stuff from matco. This stuff you can spray it on a pop can and it will not burn at all.So going to spray some of that around the handle. That should keep the warping down.

Less than 20ga ? That's scary.. you could sneeze on it and put a dent in it.
Though.. I'd never by anything labeled K.I.A.

The spray stuff sounds interesting. I've seen the putty for retaining heat and I usually just use wet towels and/or an air gun but, I'm always open to new/better ways.

Could use it on my bud's truck.. putting f-body side markers on his 72 chevy.

yeah i don't know if its thinner than 20g or just junk metal. Prob little of both.lol Yeah if i remmber to take my cam to work i'll take a pic. The stuff u spray it on after u are done just wipe it off. The stuff is the coolest thing i have seen . I think i have wasted more trying to melt sh*t with it.lol

More progress. Jay emailed me pics tonight so I updated my Car Domain page. Since the TGO "rule of 3" is in effect, I'll just post one more pic on this thread and give you the link to my page so you can see the rest.

Click here for the latest body/paint pics. Jay ended up sanding off all the primer I put on the RH 1/4 panel since it was lacquer primer and is prone to shrinking and cracking:
