Respirators

Painted a few cars i have been useing a half mask . Going to buy a full face one. The one i'm looking at saies i can spray laquer, enamel and pesticides. They have differnt
cartridges. What one is the best for spraying with primmers and b/c c/c? The half one i have now has organic vapor cartridges. But i can still smell paint with it. Not much but i would rather not smell anything.

Reality check here.. the only automotive paint products you can safely spray with a mask like that is Epoxy Primers. Base coats, clear coats, surfacing primers etc. use Isocyanates in the activator. Really bad for your health. The only safe way to protect your self is a fresh air hood. ya they are $$$ so if you can borrow one or rent one from some where, all the better. I personally use a fresh air hood for everything.

So you would sacrifice your personal health just to paint your car.. (shakes head).

I doesn't matter if don't spray everyday or not. And the painter where you work.. That would be his choice not to properly protect himself. I've heard many reasons.. non make any sense.. Having a downdraft booth just means you have a better spray environment. But it doesn't change how the chemicals affect you.

But all I can do is warn you of the harmful effects. Isocyanates do not leave your body. They are absorbed and stay. Eventually your painter friend will die because of it. It's a hard fact of reality. A friend of mine lost several of his friends in the industry because of it lack of knowledge at the time, he left the industry and never goes near the stuff anymore. He knows the chemicals are there.. But can't do anything about it. Because they don't effect you right away you don't think about it. It it will catch up to you from repeated exposure. As you mentioned you don't spray everyday.. Which may be ok, but of course in the end it's your choice how you wish to protect your self.

But refering to your original question.. organic vapor ones are probably your only choice. don't forget to change the partical filters that go ahead of the charcoal ones. It'll help. But you will smell the paint. only the fresh air mask will enable you to smell nothing.

I'm glad that painting my car won't kill you now.

Good choice Jay,
As Fast stated, there's no one that will look out for you, but you!
Fresh air IS the best way to go.
And it really is neither here, nor there, that you only spray "once in a while."
Look at it like an allergy, some people just tolerate it better than others. Iso's CAN damage you after just one exposure.
You don't even know your sick untill your body is full of the stuff.
You're like a sponge that never leaks or dries out, once you're saturated with Iso's, you can never be exposed to them again.
Longterm?? Go see your painter buddy in about 15-20 years, (if he makes it that long...), If he did, You can use him for a Jaccuzzi.
After all the coating is stripped from his nerves by the chemicals he's poisoned his body with, just toss his twitching carcass in the pool and VOILA', instant HOTTUB!!!!!!!!!!!!
