Paint Prep, HOK said 40grit?..ouch
Hey guys, I am getting ready to paint my car. Now I just started the sanding and have allready found out it has two paint jobs on it *sigh*. Now I have been DA'ing it with 180 and hand sanding with 220 BUT I was reading through a House of Kolor book I purchased about paint prep and they recommended 40grit
they say their epox primmer can fill up to 27gr scratches, is this true? I freak out when I hit metal with my 180 am I being to cautious? I just want to know because if I am I can relax a bit and it will seriously decrease my time. (I am trying to take too the first primer.
Oh one more questions, what do you guys use to cover bare metal spots while preping the work? I have been using a thin coat of spray can primer.(anyone know anything better?)
Thanks,
Loco

to cover bare metal you have to use epoxy primer as urethaine primers wont adhear properly to bare metal. im not sure what rattle can primer is but its def not epoxy. i dont think you can get epoxy primer in a rattle can tho. my best advice is to buy some epoxy primer and urethaine primer from your paint supplier and spray it on using a gun. however if the bare metal spots are small, like only 3 inches in diameter you may be able to get away with just urethaine primer.

Hell ****in no, 40 is outta question, you can use 120 even when going all hte way through the paint, then just go over it with 220 grit and a sanding block them prime it with epoxy or urithane primer, no rattle can stuff, have to use automotive grade primer or it will rust and it wont stick to the car.

I use 40 grit all day long at work to strip the paint off were i'm going to put filler.Never had a prob with see any thing. To strip the hole car i try to stay way from 40 have no prob with 80 grit than go over that with 180. Your going to use a good etching primmer on the bare metal than 2 or 3 coats of primmer. Blocking each one. U could get away with 2 coats but I like useing 3. If the car is not siting for along time while u are sanding and doing the bodywork theres no need to worrie about the metal rusting.I go over the hole car before i lay down the etching primmer with 220 or 320. So that takes care of any little surface rust thats starting and the etching primmer has rust converts in it.The car i'm doing now has been sitting for about 2 / 3 weeks in bare metal.Theres no sign of rust anywere.
the only thing rattle can primer is good for is painting something you will use rattle can paint like your lawnmower deck or something you dont really care about. get some good epoxy/2k primer from the company who makes the paint you are using. If you continue to use that crap primer you paint job will show it in a year or so.

Listen
LISTEN TO JAY. you can go down to metal with 80 no prob just try to stay out of it for long time. i use it on the bondo hog all day at work to fix bondo jobs that have been done wrong. use a etching primer and wear a face mask cause that stuff will tear you up. also use a zinc based bondo so it sticks to the metal. good primer should cover 180 scratches all day, you dont want the metal to smooth, the paint needs somthing to grip into, id use like 220. and da it down with 320 softpad if you got one.

I wouldn't let any metal sit over the few hours or so that it takes to prep the panels for primer.

Be careful Jay... you may not SEE the oxidation, but it's there. Especially if the weather has been on a warming trend in your area, there is more humidity in the air.

Very true. Rattle can primer will not protect it from rust for any length of time... it actually sucks in moisture so stay away from that crap.

Well most of the time i don't. But just can not get the the weather to break. Gets a little warm than frezzing the next day .But i'm going over the hole car before i spray anything. And plus its so dusty in my garage that takes care of any moisture.lol j/k. Any kind of primmer over time is goig to soak up moisture. Can primmer does not belong on a car. ..
