fiberglass hood problem

No its not a question about alignment. The edges of my ASCD hood are cracking. My body shop says the hinges are strong for such a lightweight hood. Everytime I close I have to move the hood down before the back end follows. When I lift the hood it lifts off center and and hangs in the corner a bit. Will the 83 fiberglass hood struts solve my dilemna or do I have to search for a worn out set from the junkyard. Has anybody heard of or had this problem. When I talked to a Tech at ASCD he told me this rarely happens.

Are you still using the stock steel hood struts? If so, you need to remove them asap. I would get a set of the one for the factory plastic hood.

Its actually plastic w/fiberglass.Same as fieros, vette.etc panels.Anyway you can adjust the Rr of the hood(sticking,hanging.etc).There is a small round rubber cap on the very back of the fender.just in front of the windshield.Remove the rubber cap.Rotate the bolt either up(if hood stick/hangs)or rotate down(if hood is too high when closed or pops up too soon when opening). That should help some,if your struts are already worn out some(if you can compress they are, some). They should be O.K to use. However if you CANT compress then try an other set.

I say it depends upon which fiberglass hood you have. The one i have weighs as much as my factory hood. When i bought my hood over a year ago i bought brand new hood struts for my car and i have had 0 problems with it. I tried using the hood struts i had before but they wouldnt hold it hood up it was too heavy. I dont think those ones for the factory glass hood would hold my hood up.

The hood appears to be fiberglass,

but in GM writings, they refer to the hood as 'plastic'

VFN fiberglass makes stock RS hoods... they're identical to Z28s, but without the provisions for the louvers or power buldges..... however you can get aftermarket ones that fit onto it and make it look like stock..

since mines a RS and i dont care for cowls or louvers, im getting one..
