looking for a set of new door handles, ideas?

I'm painting the car and since the outside door handles are going to have to come off, I figured why not just replace them? I did think about shaving them, but I decided against it.

Does anyone know where I can find a set? I think I heard someone mention that a newer truck came with them, but I'm not sure. Do dealers still have them? Anyone have a part number I can cross?

Many thanks.

Fourth Generation handles fit perfectly and they tend to not rattle around nearly as much as our handles. Most of them still look brand new also.

Not to mention they are dirt cheap at a junkyard (free if you have pockets)

That's terrible. Some yards around here don't sell the handles because then its much harder for them to sell the whole door (something they actually make money off of instead of a $5 handle).

junk yards make money off everything. the difference between an entire door and a handle is how much more they make. its not like they care what you take anyway. at least around here they dont.

hotrod or one of those magazines did an article of replacing 3rd gen handles with ones from S-10. Unlike ours S-10 ones are flush with the door. I was thinking about doing that.

1. They don't make money if you don't pay, as was stated.
2. It's harder to sell a door when it's picked apart so places around here don't sell handles separately, and some don't sell spoilers either.

josh, i feel bad for you and your junkyards...around missouri theyre much more liberal. In the boonies where i go to school, they can be a lil' stuck up. Im in good w/ a guy back in St. Louis, who'll let me take just about anything i want for dirt cheap, if anything at all. Including engines, tranny's, 4th gen dashes, and interiors (when they're in) until he gets that leather set, cause i know he's gonna rape me for them since he knows im still wanting them...BAD.

What do they look like? I want to retain a stock apearance.

All the fourth gen handles are rounded out. Are there any box style like ours?

I guess if the s-10 thing doesn't work out I will just convert over to 4th gen.

Whether you admit it in this thread or not, I guarantee you have put a stupid little part from the junkyard in your pocket.

I think enough of them rape enough people for crappy parts to offset it. If you go to the junkyard and routinely steal parts and go through alot of trouble to do it... Then yes, that is horrible. I give them enough of my money to not hear any bitching when I walk out with a pair of door handles in my pocket.

And saying that it's messed up to take a door handle off because then it's harder to sell the door is kind of ignorant and seems like you're only saying it to oppose me for no reason. That would mean taking ANYTHING off of ANYTHING is an immoral thing to do because "then it's harder for them to sell". Taking *****, screws, one tail-light lens, one piece of ground effects, etc, would ALL fall into your category.

And your junkyards not selling spoilers and door handles?!?!?! THAT is horrible.

If someone ever asks me to buy an entire door or an entire hatch because I want a striker mechanism or a spoiler I'd tell them to eph off.

Might as well go buy a whole damn cow next time I want a hamburger.

^yup

the only difference I could tell up close was that the fourth gen handles had no indents on the outside face of the handle itself (like where fuel injection is written on some earlier cars)

My fiance wanted to buy a windshield from a local junkyard here (over 2 years ago) . They had a good windshield on a camaro that had been rearended by a semi (crushed up to the rear seat). He wouldnt give her the windshield because he 'might' be able to sell the whole car... but the stupid bastard sold the t-tops the day it came in, so the interior was ruined.....the car is still sitting there, but the windshield is cracked now. That is horrible.

1. Junkyards make money by selling scrap metal. The parts they sell to us is an additional income.
2. ... I have no idea, I can't even respond to this. I've never run into this problem.

My bad. I was under the impression that 4th gen handles looked like what Gecz28 had pictured. Those would work very well with the paint theme and I could get them brand new from a dealer (read: no wear). Don't worry, I will junkyard the nose and fender.

hotrod 82 camaro

These guys did GM truck handles but they never showed a picture of the final product, at least not in that article. I am thinking of at least trying it since I have 2 extra doors now to play and practice with.
