Got an estamate for a paint job on my car

Sorry this is for my first gen if you can please let it stay open for a day.

I took my car to get an estimate for a paint job here is what he quoted me.
strip all the paint off the trunk
fix all the waves that you can feel in the body take off all emblems and doorhandles before painting
put a patch pannel in my trunk were it is broken and align it
put a new frront valence on "i will supply the part"
Put the spoiler on "i will spuuly the spoiler"
Cut a hole in the hood and install my hood tach
Put on the bumper and all trim pices
a 2 stage paint job and he will do the jams and under the hood and the trunk.
Align the right fender.
Total 3700

if i want him to also block sand the whole car and prime the whole car he said it wilc dome to 4100

Does this sound about right i have no clue when it comes to body work all i know is the guy who did the work before ****ed up everyghing on my car

That sounds not bad for 2 stage. You could lower the price if you did some of the prep work your self, and the trim work. But if you do not have the time, or the know how, than that is not a bad price. That is of course he or she is a decent bodyman. Best off luck man. Just do not go the macco route, like I did, on my first paint job.

it sounds like a fair price, that will get you a fair job. Won't be show quality, but it'll be a LONG way from maaco or earl scheib.

imo I'd just let him do the prep, prep is 95% of the paint job and is easy for a beginner to screw up.

Ya the prep is most of the paint job, but if he can not spray the impossible clear coat it is no good. I have been painting alot as of late, and can do the base coat easy enough, but when it comes to the clear it is not that easy. But if you are in the body biz then you should be not bad at it I hope.

When we were talking he said he had not seen a 68 bird in years and he would want to make it look show quality he also wants to sand the whole car and strip all the paint off the pannels were the paint is chipping off.

yeah im planning on getting a nice paint job for my car, first i have to save up for my SFC and custom rollcage and then it goes to paint. I plan on spending 5 to 8 grand on my paintjob.

Well if he wants to put fourth the extra effort to make your car show quality for the price offered or close to it than I'd tell him to go for it. If he wants to charge you more and justify it by not seeing a 68 in years, I'd say no thanks, that is if show quality is not what you want. Otherwise I'm with the majority in saying it's a fair price. Good luck.

When we were talking i first told him i want it to look nice as a daily driver and nice for car shows then when we were in his office talking and he said he wants to make it flawless and when people ask who did the work i can say it was him and it would help bring him business.

When he finally decided just how nice he wants it to be, was it before or after he quoted you on the price?

It was after we talked.

Basicly i was seeing if i could cut corners and just get a normal paint job and not do any fancy bodywork and the price difference was about 1000.00 and he said that it is a rare car and it should be done right and he basicly does not want to half *** it and in the long run doing it right the first time would save me money which makes sence.

See if he'd cut you a deal if you got a notorized document or contract stating that you'd place "Paint by:" with his company and location, on your info sheet in car shows. It'd be a win-win situation.

Usually, there's an information sheet in the front or rear window of the car at a show, that states year, make, model, engine, tranny, 'official' paint color, owners name, all the basic info for the car. It varies show to show. You'd just write "Paint by:" on that sheet.

If you are looking for sponsorship, you could also suggest a vinal sticker placed on a window of the car, stating who did the "body/paint by xxxx shop". He should give you a good price break ($500-$600 or such) if you are willing to do that sort of advertisement for his business. He would spend more than $500-$600 on a billboard, color newspaper ad, or television ad.

Many years ago, a friend of mine got a real nice paint job for a really low price. He allowed the shop to paint a "paint by" on the edge of the trunk lid. My friend was all for it because the shop had their name on his car and he knew they would do a good job because of it. The size of the "Paint By" was about the same size as a dealership decal. They also did the "Paint By" in a color that flowed with the car and not a bright white or something stupid.

If I was looking for a great paint job at a low price, having a sponsor that does great work for a small advertising fee would not bother me. I'd be proud to tell people where I got the paint job. With the advertisement on the car, I wouldn't have to tell as many people.

all depends on exactly what you're looking for, I usually quote them around a grand and I'm one of the cheaper prices in my area....
