My interior is going downhill
I bought my car used about a year ago. I'm wondering what i can do with my interior. A lot of the interior panels shake and squeak. My seats are loose, the button does not need to be pressed to slide them forward to get in the back seat. The seat belts don't engage when jerked forward. What can i do?
Thanks

All are really common problems in thirdgens. The seatbelts were recalled, as was the recliner assembly in your seats. I got sick of both problems and ended up buying a set of seatbelts from an 02 Trans Am and new front seats.

Defect
THE METAL LATCHPLATES MAY NOT ENGAGE THE BUCKLE ASSEMBLIES, CAUSING A "NO LATCH" CONDITION. MOVEMENT OF THE SEAT OCCUPANT IN THIS CONDITION COULD CAUSE LATCHPLATE RELEASE FROM THE BUCKLE.
Consequence
UNBELTED OR INCORRECTLY BELTED SEAT OCCUPANTS ARESUBJECTED TO INCREASED RISK OF INJURY IN THE EVENT OF SUDDEN STOP OR ACCIDENT.

THE FRONT SEAT UPPER HINGE COVER SCREWS ARE TOO LONG, AND INTERFERE WITH THE SEAT BACK INERTIA LOCK. THIS PREVENTS THE SEAT BACK FROM LOCKING PROPERLY.
Consequence
IN THE EVENT OF A SUDDEN STOP OR VEHICLE IMPACT, ANUNLOCKED SEAT BACK WOULD INCREASE THE RISK OF INJURY TO THE SEAT OCCUPANT.
Corrective Action
REPLACE SCREWS SECURING UPPER HINGE TRIM COVER WITH CORRECT LENGTH SCREWS.

I know even 15 years later the seatbelts should be replaced free of charge, but what about the seatbacks?
It bugs me that the seatbacks dont latch, I wonder if they would replace them for free?
Also, what year did you look up those recalls for? I never found the seatback recall for a 1990, just the belt one.

thats a good question. how long are recalls good for. seeing that they discontinue parts for our cars i wonder if the recalls like the belts would still be availbe if you went to the dealer

I actually like the fact that my seatbacks dont lock. If i have something in the foot behind the passenger seat and im in the drivers seat, since im the only person allowed in that seat, i can just lean the seat forward and grab whatever it is im getting. Plus it makes things easier if you're putting stuff in the back seat.
Safe, no. Convenient, yes.

The seatbelt recall doesn't affect the portion coming out of the roof, only the buckles themselves by the console, the plastic would become brittle and break. My seatbelts have never caught, but when I hit a car that pulled out in front of me, they caught. It takes alot of forward inertia for the seatbelts to catch.

I highly recommend the 4th gen belts as an upgrade. They're still GM, bolt in just fine, and they lock when they're supposed to, and also retract all the way. Even better, they don't have that goofy design with the two seat belt retractors so you've gotta reach down to get the belt. I never got used to that.
