Any windshield installers....
To any windshield installers, i need some advice. I'm doing my own windshield in my car. I got the window out of my parts car without scratching, breaking, or otherwise damaging it. And i got the old window out of my car. I have to do some rust repair on the pinchweld, some small rust hole, and treating the rust and such. But what is the best way to prep the pinchweld before installing the glass?? I have some proffesional 2 part urathane primer. I also have a small one time use aplicator of the correct widow/pinchweld primer my dad picked up for me at the body shop. Is the 2 part primer aceptable to prime the pinchweld area with before installing the glass? I know im going to be stiping down the whole thing to metal to repair the rust.
The pinchweld prep will vary slightly depending the brand of urethane you are using. You are on the right track though...the pinchweld needs to be primed as well as the glass (usually 2 differnt primers)...dont believe any "primerless to glass" claims..its BS. Get "wrap around molding"...it fits on the glass before you put it in. That will keep the windshiled at a good level and prevent you from pushing it down to far.
Hope that helped!

I've seen some cars with metal clips about every foot or so...is that for the same thing: so you don't push the glass in too far?
Probably not, Im assuming you are talking about cars with metal moldings...like a 79 camaro. The clips hold the molding. Ive seen some glass guys use rubber stoppers...some use foam, but on our cars if you use the wrap around molding you shouldnt need anything...as long as you dont go crazy with pushing on it.

So, is standard 2 part urethane epoxy primer ok alone, or should i use something over that? I have the 2 part primer, and it needs to be used up. I wont be painting the whole car untill the spring.
You need to use the primer made for the urethane that you are using...for example...essex urethane...use essex primer. In an ideal world, you would trim the urethane down as much as possible without breaking the factory paint, and just apply new urethane over that. But, when body work needs to be done...primer needs to be applied...look on the manufactures website for the correct one.

If you dont mind could you give me your method for removing the windsheild? I am trying to get one to replace my cracked one. I would also like to paint my car with the windsheild removed.
Thanks.
Thanks.

Old guitar strings. A razor knife. Lots of work, and a good pair of gloves. acctually, i only got about 3/4 of the way done before i ran out of stings, and started using stainless saftey wire. I just cut a spot at the top with a razor knife untill i could get the strings through, then started working my way around. I got it done by myself, but it was easyer, because my parts car is gutted, no dash to get in the way. The broken window i took out, i only cut the top and most of the sides, then just pushed it out with my feet. But of course, i didnt care about breaking that one.
