I think it's a guage swap...

Alright, so I want to put this guage cluster into my Firebird... I have an *84 Firebird S/E, yes it's a V8... Anyways, first and foremost, does anyone know what kinda cluster this is? One of my friend's gave it to me b/c... She found it in a bunch of ex b.f.'s stuff and well... Yeah. She said he said it was from a 3rd gen Camaro... So, are they interchangeable?

Second, where can I find the dash cover for it? Will the sway be easy? I want to keep as much of my origional & surrounding area (What's it called?) as possible... So can I switch those two pieces and that's it?

Any help would be MAJORLY apperciated!!!

it appears to be any 1990-1992 camaro dash. but, you'll need the computer from it to make it work right as all of the signals for that particular guage cluster go through the computer first.

This is nowhere near a direct bolt in. Get ready for wiring, cutting, swapping, tracking down parts, etc. I wouldn't even bother with it personally.

I think the only thing that is different is the speedo being electric. The computers were never involved with the gauges in third gens.

So I figured out. I pulled out my dash console and boom... It was a PITA to do, than I figured out the two won't fit...

I was NOT happy.

Are there any guage clusters for Firebirds that go ABOVE 85 mph?

I'm sick of having CHP having to tell me how fast I'm going....

I dont know how far mine goes, mines digital and Ive had it to 125 and it still didnt hit tops. You might want to look into other firebird clusters for your car and stay around your year becase they change over to electronic ones in 86 I think.

Camaros had mechanical speedos for like 4-5 more years than the birds.

it'll be tough if not impossible for you to find a direct replacement that reads over 85 MPH. I'm pretty sure that only the later electronically controlled speedometer guage clusters went above 85 MPH.

Not to disrespect you, but from your posts I see you're fairly new with working on cars and going from a cable driven to electronic controlled speedometer would probably be a bigger project than you'd want to take on now.

There is one ouside chance you have at a direct swap. If you get guages from an 84 bird that was sold in canada, the guages go to 140 km/hr. A shop could recalibrate the guage so it reads in MPH on the 0-140 scale. That's the closest to a direct swap that I could think of.

Jeremy, yeah, that's the one. Yeah, they are expensive, but its all I've ever heard about, and I have only heard good things about Hawks.

I have two spare dashes from 87 firebirds. They are the electronic ones, but they can be made to work with a converter box Atrol.

http://www.atrol.com/atrolii.htm

I have a 120mph and a 145mph. I am keeping the 145, and I want the 8000 rpm tach from the cluster that has the 120 in it.

If you want the 120mph speedo, you can have it. But only if you figure out wheather or not you can or want to swap it out. Keep in mind you will have to figure out how you are going to wire it if you go this route. That may involve a new wiring harness for under the dash.

Im selling a 120 mph cluster

Just in case you need to know, I have a 120 mph dash from a 91 Firebird, it should fit no prob from 86-92, no calibration needed! I moded mine with one just pull out the old and snap in the new! nothing is easier. The bezel (it looks new, good vents) will only fit in a 90-92 I think. Check it out on ebay, if your not a member of ebay, leave me a message, I come across them now and then. There is a junkyard in my area that always has 6 to 10 3rd gen F's in there, sometimes I leave with a whole truckload, and if you were looking for a digital dash for a Camaro, I have one from a 84 on ebay as well.

One of my 84s has the big ugly airplane speedo (80mph) and the other 84 has a 140MPH which is a mechanical, i doubt its original to the car as alot of thigs on it are from newer camaros.

This is the second post I've seen dealing with a 90-92 gauge swap tonight. What, I do it and everyone has to copy? Lol just messing around everyone

Anyway, as I said, I just did it. It was not hard AT ALL. It was harder getting the dash in physically then wiring it up. I have an 88 Camaro, so I'm not sure how the Firebird is, but here is some tips I have to help you out.

-When you get the new dash, there is a metal brace that runs under it the whole width of the car. It has two bolts; one on each end. Take them out and grab it just in case. Also, snag that same brace from like an 82-89 Camaro. I'll get to why in a bit.
-Drop the steering column to do this job. Trust me. TONS easier.
-Take care removing your old dash as some of the wiring harness is held onto it with little clips. Also, remove the computer. It makes removal AND installation MUCH easier.
-The panels that go underneath the dash on the driver and pass. side are unique to the 90-92 dashes. So grab those too.
-Grab the 2 connectors for the gauge cluster. Cut them off and be sure to leave a bit of the wiring on the connectors for splicing.

Now here is why you need both the braces from under the dash. The 90-92 brace is TOTALLY different from the earlier ones, as you will see. When I put in the brace that came with my 92 dash, it actually pushed the dash towards the seats about 3 inches. No way that would work. BUT all hope is NOT lost! The reason you grabbed the older style one is because that one will allow the new dash to sit PERFECTLY in the car, right where it should be. You may hafta drill some holes in the new dash to match up to the holes on the brace, but it's easy. The ONLY thing about the older brace is it doesn't have a way to hold the underdash trim piece on the driver's side. I haven't gotten over that issue yet, so I can't help ya there.

I have the pinouts for the 92 dash but not the firebird one. Maybe someone else here can help with that. With my car, once I had the pinouts, everything went together easy as pie.

Also, the 90-92 dash, radio, HVAC controls, and shifter plate had yellow lettering and I dunno what the Firebirds had. So if you put them gauges in, you might wanna snag the other stuff mentioned so it all matches.

Trust me, this swap is worth it if you go ahead with it. I LOVE the way the gauges look in my car, and they look especially good at night. And they work a lot smoother than my old ones did.

Plus it's cool to trick people and say I have an 88. It felt like a big accomplishment to me cuz many said it can't be done. But me and my buddy did it, and it all works like it should.

Good luck and any other questions just holler.

Kevin
