Im sure you'll be fine as long as you wrap them in the right profile rubber....Im not sure on the size for 17's....but take my rear 18x10's for example...I run a 35r...keeps them the stock height and I havent had any problems....Im sure someone with 17's will chime in for ya

245/50/r16 (stock) and 245/45/r17 as your friend suggested are extremely close diameter wise so they won't look goofy and your speedo won’t get affected. Tire (rubber) diameter will remain almost the exact same.

I question the width though. You said your rims are 17x9.5. You could easily run a much wider tire. Heck, the stockers run a 245 on an 8" wide rim. I would go with a 305 (305/35/r17) on the rear and call it a day. Might stick with a less narrow tire up front for looks and so that your wheel won't get yanked around as much.

a 305 on a 9.5" wheel is a little wide dont ya think? Im running 10" on my rear wheels and only sport a 285 and they fill in nicely, a 295 would be about the max Id go on my 10s

You're right. I just did a quick little bit of math and keeping the same tire/rim ratio as stock you would want to run a 290 on 9.5" wide rims.

Overall tire diameter won't change, so it wont impact lowering. As long as your suspension is stiff enough you shouldn't bottom out.

As for tire size, check this out: http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html. The first number is tire width in mm, the second is a ratio between width and rimsize for sidewall, and the third is rim size.

eibach pro kit, 18's in back, and here's a pic. I'd run 275's all around in the interest of rotating the tires, and it'd be cheaper than getting 305's.. can't wait to see them on your car, man! what are ya gonna do with your crosslace wheels?

they actually dont look bad...the fact that they are 17" lets you run your stock brakes without lookin dis-poportioned.....the rear sticks out a little too far though

i went with 245/45/17. there was alot of clearance issues thoguh. we had to cut some of the strut and shave the tie rods and put 3 spacers in front. but yeah they do stick out kinda far in the back im not even sure if im keeping them. i might sell them cause i dont like chrome. or mayeb get them powder coated black.

I think they look great!! Ive always loved the way Y2k C5 wheels look on our cars. Do you have a shot from the rear so we can see how far they stick out? Are you using 2" spacers in the rear? Thats weird that they stick out that far unless its not as bad in person. Edit: 2nd look they dont look too bad actually. Once you lower it if you can it will probably look better.
