Windshield

I need to replace the windshield in my 89 formula. I have found a used winshield at a pick and pull. Does anyone have any suggestions on the best way to remove it.

Dont bother call a glass company and have them come replace yours with a brand new one, might be more money but 9 times out of 10 you will break that windshield trying to pull it out.

Might want to PM kboehringer and check his thread in History/Restoration. He recently pulled and reinstalled his windshield. Based on his experience, I say give it a try and only pay to get it done if the extra expense offsets the hassle.

Course in my experience it's usually only done right when you do it yourself.

This is one where it is wrong, any other glass on a car i say go ahead and remove yourself, but you need to use the correct urethane and need to do it perfectly right to get a complete seal, this is one that is best left for the glass company, not to mention that the windsheild can be up to 50% of the cabins strength. id leave it for the pros. Hell, i don't even know of any body shops that do them. they all call the glass company.

92MaroRS has a valid point. I did seem to imply that I had some experience in windshields when, in fact, I do not. Just wanted to point you towards someone else that had done the do-it-yourself job so you have information on both options in order to make your own decision.

I paid a guy $175 to replace a windshield for me... he came to the house, vacuumed all the broken glass out of the inside, installed a new windshield with a new molding... The only downside is that the new windshield had the wrong size shoe for the rear view mirror. I just got a mirror from a newer GM car, fit perfect looks identical.

Why mess with used 10 year old glass? it'll just be rock chipped and scratched to hell. Buy new and save yourself the trouble.

i tryed to replace my own in my firebird....i went and a local guy had a used window out of a iroc and so i went picked it up for 50 bucks.....got it home.... spent the time and solvent to clean all the stucky black stuff off it....and was going to pick it up lost my footing and just barley touched the edge of the window with my toe (when the glass was on the gorund) geting ready to lay it on a table and my foot put a small crack in the winshild.....i was sooooooo mad....i couldnt belive it... that window went from like new to garbage in a spit second. About the fastest way i wasted 50 bucks of my money before and i didnt even get a headace the next day.

so now i will never try that again.....ill suck it up and take it to the pros for the extra $$ plus you get a warrentie. And you can stand back and laugh if the pro breaks it cause your not payying for it. I hear takin the old window out isnt that easy either uless you wanna break it totaly and make a big mess?? I wouldnt know i didnt get to that stage yet.
