what paint is this?

Hey guys, I have been tossing around ideas on what to paint my trans am, and I have a great theme. I am wondering what paint this would be. I like the low gloss, eggshell sheen it has.

Do you think I could get this with just a sealer-primer with a mix of gloss black to up the shine a little?

What method would you suggest to get exactly this level of gloss, or non-gloss I guess?

This is a temporary image, so it won't show up for long.

I have been thinking about blitz black for a while, but I don't know if I want to go enamel.

Thanks

It's hard to tell from the light, but it looks like a flat black or flat silver. It doesn't have enough shine on it to be a semi-gloss, so look in the flat section at your local auto store and see if you can find a touch up color that matches, if it does, you know the color you want.

What I mean is what brand, or what style.

I plan on going with a flat black, but a little less dull than flat. Satin, or low-gloss. Just not gloss.

I am worried about it sealing out the moisture, and not feeling chalky. I assure you that this is not to be cheap on a paint job, but rather because I have always wanted a flat black car since I was very young.

If I was to go to buy the paint, what would you recommend?

thanks,

the only way to get a flat paintjob is to paint your car with vunyl resin that is used on bumpers for trucks and on interiors and whatnot....or to pain the car black or whatever color adn then flatten ou the clear so its not shiny...i jus did my cuz wrx in flat black with the vunyl...looks bangin...but if ya planin on keepin the car for a while like 5+ years....id go with flat clear...for the obvious protection reasons...

i believe thats sealer your looking at on the bumper, comes on all new replacment panels, just to keep the metal from rusting. if you thinking of painting your car this color like an old hot rod look you could do a primer and color it black, primer can be colored to any color to help match with paint. you could leave the primer on and not paint it and it should be fine, just dont clear it or sand it, you should get an eggshell look from that.

I left my camaro in black primer for over a year, it held up fine plus was great for those anoying door dings that you get from jerks that cant park.

you cant just add black paint to the primer or sealer, doesnt work that way, 2 step paint systems that are used today mean that all paints are actually flat in color until the clear is shot. so adding it to the primer woldnt do anything. maybe you could find an enamel paint that was like semi gloss, enamel paints for automotive use dont come in many shades though.

Blitz black is a flat enamel, but it has a striping problem. It dries before you have a chance to make the pass, so you end up with stripes where you lay one pass, move down, and the next overlapping pass is striped because of the wet paint going on the dried paint you just layed down.

I will probably go with blitz, but with enamel, I am told that I cannot change my mind later and hope to have an easy time removing it.

I would have to strip the car down to metal if I ever change my mind, because (I am told) that acrilic paint will not stick to an old enamel job.

What car craft did on their first gen camaro was use dupont sealer primer, and mix in a little green paint to get the correct amount of shine and a little tint of color. It came out with a satin black, with hint of green color that was awesome. I am looking to go just black, so that is why I would mix a little black gloss in with the sealer.

IROC_5769, are you sure that I am not able to mix a little gloss with the sealer-primer? I am almost positive that is what car craft did.

Hey Charged350, have any pics of how the color came out on your WRX? I would really like to see it. I have never heard of anyone using the bumper paint on body of the car.

I don't think that this paint on the picture is silver, it is just the flash. I guess I am just going to have to experiment with a paint job and see how it turns out.

Let me know if you guys have any other ideas, thanks.

i have added color to clear before it works fine nuthing wrong with that, but im unsure about adding clear to primer/sealer, it may work but you would have to do some test sprays with different amounts of clear to primer/sealer see what turns out best for you. as i said never tried it myself, if it works out for you through in a little pearl. be an interesting look if it works out. ill be doing some painting next week i can do a few tests see what works, im pretty busy with work right now, but ill see what i can do.

I've used Sherwin Williams Automotive paints with decent results. (Would have been better, with a better environment, and a bit more experience on my part.) For their basecoat
-clearcoat products, they offer a "flatting" agent intended to be added to the clearcoat, that accomplishes the satin effect. It would take some experimentation to get the desired effect, but
I think you'd like the results. Good luck.
