Gas springs for the hood

The gas springs for the engine hood is worn out. They cant keep up the hood (was worn out when I bougth the car).

The gas springs alone keep the hood upright (I mean, there isnt any other locking-mechanism here?), am I right??

It is easier to find an aftermarket gas springs around here, so I need spec/info about the springs. How many Newton are they? (Newton is marked with an "N" after the number. Example: 350N)

A blue tape on top of spring isnt possible to read anymore (if spec has been stamped there)

Correct.

Sorry, no numbers visible on the blue sticker on my struts either. No other markings on them that I can see. I need new ones for both cars!

Just go into the parts store and look at the book....look up your car...get the part number, and pull em off the shelf...thats what I did...frankly, I couldnt care less how many newtons they were rated for...I got the ones listed for my car, and they worked perfectly

The "Strong Arm" brand part number is 4422, if that helps you any.

Thanks, but here in Norway, Europe a US/GM partshop isnt easy available. They maybe have original struts at the mainoffice, but they are about 400 miles from here.

Therefore, I would try to locate struts at a local universal carparts-shop, but then I have to know the pressure i Newton. But the SIZE of the strut is easy to compare

Why not go to a web site like napaonline.com and just order the right ones for you.. Just have them shipped to you..

I have a set of hood struts I picked up from the parts store the other day but they have no markings on them in newtons or psi. I can however tell you that I can't even budge it by hand so it's going to have to be pretty stout.

Uhmm....by sending them from US to Europe tends to multiply the price by 10 times

The local partshop has struts for European car-hoods for 20$ each. They are marked with pressure-value all of them.http://www.biltema.no

Anyway, I searched www.napaonline.com, but they had only door-hinges in that part-category.

napaonline was just a thought.. I know U might also find a buddie here and see if maybe someone can get it in the states and ship them to U if you cover the bill.. I have done this for friends of mine on the FTE boards.

Thanks

If you cant move it by hand then the pressure probably is at least 300N on it. But, first time movement of a new gas strut is always harder than later.....

Pity that it had no markings....

Just as an FYI...I recently pulled my 91 z28 into the shop for an engine swap.

9 year old struts, wouldnt hold up the hood, and I still couldnt move em by hand.

Dunno if it helps any, but the GM part numbers are #GM-C141 R or GM-C142 L, hawks thirdgen has em...here:

Thanks everyone.

If Angelis check the new struts if they have number, that would be great.

If not, I will try to figure out the right strut at the local shop by "try and return-metod".

By the way, the struts at the back are bad too...

I would think that who ever you find that rebuilds these things would know how much pressure to put into them.

My blue stickered aftermarket struts have the 4422 number and made in usa stamp, but no brand name or psi.

Re: Gas springs for the hood

I've never seen a PSI or newton meter number on any struts or replacement struts...

If someone grabs a new one, push it down on a scale and record the number then convert it into that goofy newton meter number..

FWIW, they're made/distributed by AMS Automotive. No pressure specs.

I also need mine replaced. I found them on Rock Auto. Going to give the AC Delco brand a try.

Re: Gas springs for the hood

Stablius or something like that is a better brand. The delcos won't last very long. This is one time i"d say, don't use gm/delco parts.

Re: Gas springs for the hood

You guys are looking for some fairly priced struts that will hold the hood up and the rear hatch without any issue, well look no further! I found a company on ebay called StrongArm. I bought their struts for my hood and hatch and they work freaking great!

and these were the hatch struts. Now I just push the button on my center console for my hatch release, and it pops open on its own, just like in 1991! Highly recommend!

Re: Gas springs for the hood

Honestly I'd rather not have the hatch pop open all the way. It's only glass you know. Excessive force on that glass could cause it to shatter. The rear hatch glass isn't laminated like the front windshield is it? It's just tempered right?

Re: Gas springs for the hood

Ya, ya I know. I'm a dbag for bringing up a 2 year post :/

But just wanted to say that I just replaced my BARELY USED 4422 mighty lift hood lifts with SACHS brand.

The 4422's where on my 82 t/a with the bulge hood, hardly used and only lasted a few years before the hood started to drop a few inches was it was up

Just a courtesy heads up NOT to waste your money on the mighty lift 4422 hood shocks
