Hood will not open

I have a 1986 Z28 Iroc. My problem is the hood release will not work. I tried pulling the release but he hood will not pop up. I was wondering if
anybody has a ideas on how to open the hood. I don't know what to try. I believe the cable slipped out of the retainer on the hood release. The cable seems intact just not grabbing. Please anybody post a responce.

First of all grab a crow bar and a 30 pound sledge, a sawzall might be necessary also.
JK, pull the cable, gently nudge the hood by pushing down on it and pulling up on it, if the cable did not break a little pursuasion usually works. After you get it opened and can verify the cable is still good do a good cleaning on the latch assembly and lube it up. Hope this helps.

it helps to have a buddy one person pulls hood release other fiddles with the hood until it opens. i trick ive seen done depends how much you care for the hood it giving it a little love tap with your fist a few times.lol usually yanking up on it does the job though

on my car, I need to pull the hood release, and push it back into place for the hood to pop. It doesn't hurt to check if this is your solution, but in many other cases, making a fist and gently pounding on the hood seems to work.

My 91's hood was stuburn when I first got it. I'd have to pull the release, make sure it was pushed all the way back in, then drive around the block until it poped. I also discovered that if I gave it a good hit with the palm of my hand right above where the latch was it would pop up...Since then I've cleaned the latch, put some white lithium grease on it and it's been great since...

Ditto the love-tap method. I had this problem on my Formula when I first bought it. You want to give it a rapid, light tap about six inches up from the bottom center of the hood, right above where the latch is.

Once you get it open, make sure to clean and lube the assembly thoroughly, as Iron Duke said above. Also, check the bar on the bottom of the hood that actually goes into the latch. My problem ended up being that this latch had a fairly deep groove worn into it that the latch was getting hung up on and not allowing it to release. Put in a bar from a different car, and the problem went away.

Good luck.

If you look under from the bottom, I think you can access the two 13? mm bolts that hold the hook to the hood from below (the primary, not secondary) from a hole. if not then you can definetley reach the latch and play with it a little till it opens. My latch had some play in it and cause of that wouldn't open up so i did this to get er open

So if you can get to those, you should be good.

WD40

I had the exact same problem---just spray WD40 all over the latch once you get it open with a friend. Works every time

I had this problem also, however eventually I pulled my hood release and my cable snapped. I still havent fixed it, then again I'm not driving my car so nobody can see the pink bailing twine hanging down from the hood latch.

I had trouble opening my hood when I first got my car but found that if your hood struts are shot, it is a bear to open. I lubed the latch, replaced the struts, and have never had a problem since.

Hey guys... I was having the same issues. After cleaning the latch really well, and lubing it some, I also lubed the cable. Since I just got an old motorcycle, I already had the cable lube, and the cable lube tool ( not needed but makes less mess). The lube also cleans. You will not believe how well it gets rid of rust. Its powerful stuff! I was surprised at how much crud came out of the cable, and how much easier it moves. THat should also prevent rust inside the cable causing them to snap. Just an idea... Ill post the name of the stuff when I remember. Most cycle/snowmobile/atv shops carry both the lube and the tool.

Thanks for the tips. I'll try them this weekend if it's not a wash out.

Ditto on all the above. Try adjusting the latch on the hood itself. It slides around. Play with it and see. That's what I did.

nothing a can of WD-40 can't fix.

...just don't use that stuff when installing your I-pipe; what slips on easy, slides off even easier.
