Autometer speedo cable--from where?
I thought I could righ my factory speedo cable to work with the Autometer mechanical speedo, but apparently that wont work. Ive found a few vauge answers on here as to where to get the parts from. but is there anywhere that sells an assembled cable that will fit onto the autometer speedo head with enough length to make it to the trans? And where can I get a new speedo gear for my new 3.70 gears (had a 3.08 before). Its gettin to the point where I cant get enough time durin the day to do parts shoppin, so I was hopin to order some of this online.

yup speedo cable from 1976 full size chevy truck with a TH350 trans. 2wd, no cruise control. should be 57" if memory serves me correctly. $15 and some change to buy it. there should be a wells brand book behind the counter for the speedo cables, just measure the factory length and add 2" at least to run it into the autometer speedo. that's what i did at least.

well the cable from the '76, did it fit over the speedo head on the autometer? I thought youd have to get some kind of adapter for that.

Re: Autometer speedo cable--from where?
damn, over a year and Im finally getting around to this.
I looked up the stock T5 speedo cable for my 89, and it shows to be 77.8", so 57" I wouldnt think would cover it. I went ahead though a and ordered one for a 76 p/u, GM part# 6477499 which shows to be 80" (but also says "for 70" or less cables"??). Hopefully I ll get the cable in the next few days and post up a definiteve answer with a part# that will work. Everyones told me what kind of cable should work, but no particular part#. For a 76, Im looking at 2 different cables that I could choose from. The other one is longer, +80"

I believe one is for the 4x4 truck as the cable would have to run to the transfer case. All I know is mine went in without a hassle, you could measure with a piece of string if you wanted to get scientific on how long the cable had to absolutely be.

Re: Autometer speedo cable--from where?
ya, my car is about 50 miles away and I cant get down there for another week or so, so Im banking on the hope that the one I ordered will be the right one. Hell, if it aint, it only cost me $8 so I wouldnt be out that much. But if it does fit, Ill make sure to let everyone know just cuz I know there are people like me who need definitive answers/part#s to go by when buying parts. thanks for the help xpndbl

Re: Autometer speedo cable--from where?
IVE FOUND THE ANSWER!!!
Speedometer Cable Adapter for Autometer Speedo
Its got the Chevy style inlet with a screw on Autometer outlet. Its a little pricey, but if you're like me and you're cable is fine, and dont wanna test fit and all that, this should make for a clean install. It says that its for VDO gauges, but from Autometer's site its got the same thread pitch and size so it should fit with no problems.
BTW: That part that I got (6477499) is just a cable, meaning the metal piece that actually spins. It comes with NO casing, ends, or anything at all!! Its basically a rebuild kit for the cable. Im thinking I might just get this adapter though, seems to be a lot easier. Cost more, yes. But Im tired of fooling with this damn speedo!!

Re: Autometer speedo cable--from where?
i bought the entire cable like stated earlier and it's in my car. Too bad you didn't have the parts guy just order the entire speedo cable assembly out of their book behind the counter and you'd be done.
