another cup-holder design
Saw a post a few weeks ago about someones home-made cupholder using a pencil holder, so I figured I'd post mine.
Got the center console piece from the junkyard to replace mine which was cracked, and since it came off a car with crank windows, it was the perfect opportunity to relocate the switch holes to the rear slightly. Also had to bend some metal a tad to make it all fit.
One piece is a pvc pipe resize section I found at Homedepot, along with the top piece (which I have no idea what it is). The bottom is a hose cap/plug I found in my dads garage.
Big gulps fit in snuggly, as do regular popcans because of the multi-sized diameter. I just need to repaint the bottom though, it's almost 2 years old. I also should replace the switches (I cut out a little on the corners when I didn't need to) but I haven't gotten around to it.

I was thinking of doing something similar. But I would leave my PW switches and hatch release in the stock locations. I found a smaller sized cupholder than yours that I can just cut a whole and drop it in, but I still worried about cuttn' up the center console. I guess it would go where the rare factory clocks fit?

yeah, if you have a rare console piece, or it's in mint condition, I would suggest pulling it out and saving it. Then off to the junkyard to grab one.
It will be quite some time before there's anything rare about my car, or is in demand, so I don't to worry about it too much.

I dig it.. I'd really love to know what you used for that top piece.. can you take your insert out and take a pic of what it looks like from the side?

I have these two I found around here at the dealership. Which one you guys think I should use? They are both the same diameter. But one is a little deeper then the other. But the shorter one is "stepped". I'm thinking the deeper one would be more stable.

The window switches are kinda in the the way of the middle section when I tried to lift it. I meant to glue it down once and never did for whatever reasons.
I wanted to move the switches back further, but either the lid was in the way, or they were up against stuff underneath. The metal I had to bend was the shifter boot.
That top piece was a mystery even when I bought it at HD. It was in a bin of other parts by itself, and when I paid for it they didn't even know what it was or how much it was. The middle piece just happened to fit onto it nice and snug, and the bottom (which is a thinner, more flexible plastic), I had to make several cuts to spread it apart and fit over the other section.
Basically make a lot of measurements, go to you local HD or whatever with you tape-measure, and start piecing things together in the store.
I don't remember what I used to cut the hole, but I kept enlarging it by increments with a dremel until the top section fit right. I know I used a razor heated with a lighter to cut the plastic for the switches (you can see my first mis-calculated cut)
It's been a couple years, so any memories of details or parts reciepts with #'s are long gone.
And I think I'd go with the smaller one, then find more sections to add.
