i have an 84 firebird, well when i got the car it had a light in the center console light, well i put a bulb in there and it doesnt shut off, it uses the bulbs u find in the side marker lights. could i mount a switch somewhere to turn it on and off or is there another way to fix it? it wasnt hooked up when i bought it so i have know idea if theres something missing or not? plz if u have any ideas let me know.

they make a switch for it if your talking about just putting the bulb in the wiring clip it will stay on i did that figuring the bulb was just never replaced but it requires a switch that shuts the light off after u close the door on the counsole

yea, they probably took the bulb out because the light wouldnt turn off. If it is just the switch and not an alignment issue with the console, you should be able to fix it. Right above the bulb is a little d shaped opening that a button type switch goes in. When the lid is closed, it closes the switch like your door uses for the dome light. If its there, its probably bad, if not, you need it.

There is also a one piece unit that is similar to those used in the glove compartments of early-90's GM cars. I have that one, with the switch and the socket in one assembly. If the numbers were still on the sticker I could give them to you, and get another switch for myself. These items are very hard to find, as I have yet to see one in either the GM parts catalogs or Classic Industries' restoration catalogs.

No fair.. You have a light in your console! LOL!
Now I think Im going to do that for my car! A light, a pouch, and a lighter plug in for accesories. The lighter plug would be great for a cell phone charger, I cant stand that wire hanging in my way while Im driving! I will post this mod, and how to do it, if I do it.
Well back to topic.. Are you sure that U shaped thing isnt pressing somthing on that lid? Are there any wires leading to it on the underside?

I have seen 2 different kinds of console lights...one with a switch, it has a button on the top so when the console lid closes the light goes off. They other type doesn't have a switch on it, so I guess it stays on all the time. I don't know what cars got which switch, or if it came with the courtesy lamp option. There are 2 versions though...I got one from an '84 and it doesn't have the switch on it. My '82 didn't come with a lamp in the console, but I don't have the courtesy lamp option. Hope this helps.
Edit... I just checked my parts and illustration catalog, and it shows the switch to be part of the Lamp Option Group RPO TR9. Part is discontinued by GM. The part number it lists is 25509430

ok i looked inside my 82 t/a console- inside the storage part
and in the rear vertical wall of the box- up towards the top- is a pretty large perfectly round hole
and then just above that hole- out on the horizonal top edge of the box opening- theres a large D-shaped hole..
i think that one must be for the switch and the other for the light ?
right ?
i think mine has the wiring for it,
there are several sets of black and orange wires that were underneath, in the console assembly,
one pair of them are hacked off i know and i never did figure out yet what they are for, ( i think they are the longest two wires under the console assembly)
so hmm..
i wonder...
those wires in oyur pic above look to be black and gray ?
hmmm.....
i wish i could get inside the 82 right now hmm

does anyone know what the longest orange, and the longest black wire are for towards, or at the end, of the console wiring ?
in 82 birds anyways ?
the metal shrouded light and the otherlight are still intact in mine so its not one of those, and the power window wiring is fine not cut either
i hvae been stumped ever sinc ei removed the console assembly one day to find the two wires hacked off
thanks

I'm thinking that it actually goes to the interior lamp option if equipped. Alot of cars had the same harnesses, regardless of the options. I got a switch from an '84, but the spring inside is broken. I took the switch apart and the spring desintigrated, so I will have to find a different spring. I thought about a spring from a pen, but it is too big. I probably could make the hole bigger with a drill bit, but haven't got around to it.

Do you mean the socket or where you access it? IDK if this helps but you have to take out the rear ashtray, the you take out the ashtray backing(two screws). then you should find the light bulb.
