Problems with changing grill.

k, I just bought a new z28 grill for my rs. I got the kind with the fog light inserts and the red bowtie. Unfortunatly I the holes where the old screws went do not match up for this new grill. How do I mount this, and will I have to drill some holes or somthing in it? I did some searches with no luck. Please help.

if ur new bowtie will hide the old hole, then u
can probably just drill a new hole,
and buy a nut and a bolt to just hold them in place.

unless u want to use adhesive or something..
shouldnt be too much of a drilling there,
good luck

When I added a camaro fog light grill to my 88 sport coupe I had to drill a couple holes to attach the grill along the edges of the center section as the old louver type grill didnt attach the same way.It was really no big deal at all and it make the car look much better IMO.I used the special torx screws that were used to hold 82-84 camaro grilles on and they work great.

if you use the plastic screws, you can just drill them into the middle section on the inside where the foglights would go without drilling more holes. that's what i did. pretty simple and there aren't a bunch of holes in it.

i just did this a couple weeks ago, the top 2 holes on the outer edges line up, so i put those in, then i sucked the grill in as snug as i wanted it, and drilled out the 4 holes in the center section by the bowtie, using the holes already on the grill as a template, then i used some black self tapping screws..6 screws holding it on, ive had the car to 107 and the grills still on so i must have done something right

I attached mine loosely, by just using the center holes, where the license plate frame mounting was, but yes, everywhere else, you'll need to do some minor drilling. Although you should be able to just hold the screw, tap it with a hammer and then screw it in nicely.

Only drilling I had to do was the 3 holes in the fron for the license plate bracket (Washington front plate required), all the others lined up pretty good.

I brought the same grill for my 91 RS and i just drilled two holes on the inside along where the bow tie is instead of where the license plate holes are. That way they are hidden You can't tell at all. Hope this helps some.

This reminds me of something. This is why some people, believe it or not, think they have a Z28 when they have a RS, simply because the license plate mounting assembly, says Z28 on it *LOL*

well I bought a 'bowtie' grill to replace my 'camaro' grill, I'm hoping it is a direct 100% bolt-in... ?

Well, I talked to a guy in my area today (Checker auto store), and he told me that the RS and Z28 were different bumpers all together. He said there is no way it will really line up with out drilling or making some brackets because the whole bumper is different on the iroc. So I guess I'm going to just build a simple little bracket and let you know how it goes.

It depended on the years of the RS and the Z28. They had the same bumper cover in the later years, and different ones earlier on.

with the above poster.

IIRC, the only difference is the grille itself from '85-'92 (and, of course, the ground effects for '91 and '92). The RS had a different lower valance - "chin" spoiler - than Z28 and IROC-Z (again, IIRC)

You will likely have to drill if the holes don't line up; I recall having done this with my '92 RS when I installed a Z28 grille. Drilling new holes won't hurt anything. They won't even be noticed if done properly.

Alternatively, you could pickup some "Hi-Temp/Hi-Strength Superlock Fasteners" from RadioShack - this is an exceptionally strong fastener that's similar in design to velcro. I've used it to attach rear blackouts, and it's held nicely even during prolonged speeds exceeding 100mph. The part number is '64-2360'.
