Is acetone good for removing wax and grease from paint?

Just what the title says I am painting few areas on my car with some duplicolor because the paint is peeling so bad, I am worried bout it starting to rust. I will be sanding with 800/1000 grit to clean it up and painting the spots, is acetone a of for cleaning before painting?

Denatured alcohol would be good if your going to use a chemical, how about a tack cloth?

the problem with them is you still need to use something to remove the residue left behind

I Use westleys bleech white, then dish soap,Then amonia free glass cleaner,
then sand, then glass cleaner again, tack cloth, then paint.
thats on a complete paint job.
The glass cleaner will remove any residue, and dirt.and the tack cloth will remove anything left behind from wiping off the glass cleaner.
If your just doing a few body panels, try not to hit the good panels with the westleys,
Westleys is a spray on solution that you can buy anywere, that is tipically used for under hood cleaning, and is great for wax/grease removal.
Spray in on,let sit a few minutes, then hose it off.pretty simple.
Hope it helps ya

Most parts stores, I think AutoZone too, has a cleaner called PrepSol that is designed for this. Sometimes it's really hard to get a good paint finish without fisheyes and craters. Sure gets aggravating when this happens.

Acetone

You first need to wash with water and soap to remove water soluable chemicals. Then use acetone which is a great solvent to remove wax, grease, oil. I work in a lab and we use acetone for all analytical testing because is does not leave behind any residue and evaporates very quickly.

Does denatured alcohol leave any residue?

Acetone

Denatured alcohol can leave some residue. They denature the alcohol using chemicals (i.e. triethyl citrate) which does not evaporate. This would be left behind; however usually the denaturing chemical is in the alcohol at a very low percentage (2%). I do not know what effect, if any, this would have on paint.
