Ram air II, rain

Hey guys..

Im a newb, and i know i should have spent more time with my old man at his shop to learn instead of starting so late but..

Im wondering, i have a 86 Z and well my wife really digs it and supports me geting a new engine, 4th gen leather seats, paint etc...

I am looking to get a ram air II hood and the intake filters etc...I want to be able to commute in it still, will rain hurt my engine? Does it get inside the intake and mess things up??

Thanks for your help guys!

Other people have had no problems in the rain. The water does not get sucked in like one thinks, and the filter would stop any little amount that would get in. The chance of hydro locking is pretty rare.

Ah thanks man... Im just looking at things i can do for my car now that my future engine will benefit from.. My current 305 has been very reliable and hjas alot more life left so im in no rush to replace it.. Mise well get more use out of it eh!

Let me see if i can explain this next question enough to make sense..
With the ram air hood like the stealth ram II i think is the name of it from fbody... The remake ws6 hood.... The intake seemes higher up on the hood being in a location to really ram air into the intake filter.... Because the filter is up front where it is now on a stock TPI setup... How does it really help?? Is their like a tunnel that goes under the hood back down to the intake?

I hope that makes sense..

I appreciate the quick replys man you guys rock.

With the RAII style hood you are talking about, to make it functional, you need to buy a corresponding airbox and filter, too. The airbox will sit up on the top of your core support area, with a tube going straight back to the throttle body (if you have a TPI, for other setups I dunno how it works). These hoods do not produce a true "ram air" effect, since that only occurs at much higher sppeds (like on an aircraft). But, more power and mileage might be realized from the engine being able to get a cooler, denser, less restricted charge of air.

As for the water issue, I once asked this question long ago on another Pontiac board because I wanted to add a shaker assembly to my GP. At any rate, the old-timers assured me that the water that might get into your engine while running in the rain with Ram Air was negligible and not going to hurt. Think of all the old musclecars that had ram air setups, as well as the '98-'02 Trans Am guys! Apparently, old racers used to even inject water into their engines to reduce detonation. Hydro-locking requires a lot more water than you are going to see from rain entering your intake at speed.

I had been wondering the same thing as I plan on getting a open air element and having it sit right behind the opening of my SS hood. I am going to have a little mesh screen to prevent debris from getting into the engine or hitting the filter but was always concerned with water getting into the filter.

I got cought in heavy rain one time with my hood off. When i got home i took the lid off of my open element and there was no water inside at all.

It takes alot of water to hydrolock a motor. Some people pour water down the carb to break up carbon buildup inside the motor (have dont it myself). Poured it about like i would pour oil, no probs.

I have a RAII hood and it is functional and i have never ever had a problem and i have even kept the car idling one time and shot water with a hose at the scoops and there wasnt even any water on the filter or air box for that matter trust me you have nothing to worry about Later Daniel

not just through the nostils, i don't even have weather stripping by the windshield and no water gets in, don't know how it keeps it from going in my engine bay, but it does...i will add weather stripping soon though, just incase one day you never know...

Forgot to add, if you do get the hood, I even opened up the nostrils a bit and still no water gets inside.

Ah awesome man.

Ive herd that new hoods usually dont line up right especially if the cars have had any kind of dammage... When i bought mine the door was crumpled and the fender was pretty narley from a hit and run... I got the car for 1800 bucks and went to the pick n pull and bought a new door and fender and just replaced the ones on my car and me and my old man did some minor body work and sprayed it... He hadn't painted a car in about 20 years but we had a blast. Anyways my question is, the new parts fit fine and everything lined up just right so the hood should as well unless i get a lemmon? The parts we replaced were just really dented it wasn't anything major. I do plan on possibly just keeping the hood off until im ready for the new engine and geting my car painted.. Im sure the body paint shop can adjust things for the hood perfectly. - BTW you guys been awesome helpfull.

Going to try to post a picture on here.
