Door removal

Hello friends.

I searched through the forums for a little while both today and lastnight and couldn't find any relavent topics, so I thought I would ask here.

I've recently gotten my hands on a new door for my IROC, and I've spent the past two days trying (unsuccessfully) to remove the old door, but to no avail, this car has managed to yet again throw another curveball at me.

Firstly, I've already removed the upper three bolts. They were easy to get to, and came out without a problem. The lower support bracket seems to be more of a trick. It was possible (hardly) for me to get to one of the three bolts with a wrench and remove it, but it looks as though there are 2 other bolts mounted from the inside that are holding the bracket in.

So what am I supposed to do? Do i remove the panel near the hood latch to get to them? I tried doing so already, and that thing seems like it would sooner crack than come off nicely. Any suggestions?

Oh, and another thing. The door panel is a bitch too. The window crank is giving me trouble, and I'm not exactly sure how to go about taking that off either. I hope I've been clear about what I'm trying to do. Thanks in advance for your time.

Yes, you need to remove the hood latch panel to reach the 2 last bolts. If I recall well, theres a screw under the carpet glued to the piece, holding it place. Put a jack under it so it doesnt drop on the floor. Those doors are damn heavy.

Re: Door removal

Thanks a ton, I just got it off. Now all i gotta do is figure this damn window crank thing out. They say it's held on by a clip... but I'm 5 minutes away from just breaking the damn thing off.

Re: Door removal

Theres a special tool that slides under the wndow crank and pushes the clip out so you can pull the handle off.

Takes 5 seconds to get it off, the same tool has the install tool also but i find it easier to put the clip on the handle then just push it on the door.

Re: Door removal

I never had a window crank tool, but plenty of cars with cranks. A thin flat head screw driver works fine, just start prying one end of the clip. stick the screwdriver in between the crank and the door panel and pry for a littl space, to make the clip visible. Then pry one end of the clip. Itll wanna fly off, so cup your hand around teh crank to catch it. No hard at all.

Re: Door removal

I actually ended up getting it off with a screwdriver, but in all honest truth, the whole "clip" thing seems like a really ***-backwards approach and holding a crank on. I appreciate all the help guys, it's nice to not have to learn throught the process of mistake first. : )

Re: Door removal

Ive always used a screw driver.

If that doesnt work, I use another trick. Get a shop rag, not a paper towel, a rag. Pull it tight, and using a saw motion (left to right), slide it behind the window crank. Do it so you are moving towards the open end of the clip. As the rag hits the crank shaft, start pulling the ends down, but keep the saw motion going. It will catch on the clip, and you will pull one side, then the other, then the other, etc til it pops out. And its usually caught in the rag so it doesnt go flying into the unknown.

J.

P.S... Like a tard, my first time messing with these (on a 67 pontiac), I thoughtyou had to install the clip with the handle in place. Haha. I actually did it like this with needle nose pliers til I realized you can install that clip into the handle first, then pop it on.
