removing windows and window felt strips

the window felts or window strips that r on the inside and outside of the window to keep most water from getting in....

how do you remove the outside one???

looks like you gotta remove the window itself in order to get to it.... how dumb is that?

my windows r powered

so my question is how do you remove the outside weather window strip and how do you remove the window without ruining the powerder gears?

anyone?

Apparently you can re/re the felt with the glass in place, but it is quite tricky.
I know i've read a write up on here on how to, with some pictures. Try the tech articles section on the main page.

Re: removing windows and window felt strips

Are you talking about the outer sweeps?

I just replaced mine, most of the screws you can get out by just rolling the window all the way down.

But on mine, there was 1 or 2 screws right in the middle and the glass wouldn't roll down enough to get a screw driver in there.

So I ended up, taking the glass off the tracks, so I could move it around more. I was then able to get to those 2 screws and get the sweep off.

Yeah, they are pretty simple except those two middle ones.

I used a small screwdriver bit, the little ones that interchange in a coupler.

Using small pair of vise-grips, I gripped the bit by itself, pulled the window back, and slowly, painfully pulled those screws 1/4 turn at a time. Not fun.

cdoyle:

yea i meant those two screws, but how did you get the window out of the track?

i know you have to take off the door molding and arm rest and inner door handles. but i also know u have to remove both inner n outter sweeps in ordeer to slide out the window to give it enoguh side room since the window is curved.

so did u just let the window sit in the botom of the door? sorry im just trying to picture how you did this

yes, I put a towel on the bottom of the door, and rested the window on that. It gives you just enough room to get a screwdriver in there.

To get the window off the track, I'm trying to remember how it comes apart. But I think you need to remove the track that goes up/down. Once it's out, you can slide the window left/right and get it off those tracks. Then just let it rest in the door. Once you're in there, you'll see how it comes apart.

I also tried the screwdriver bit and vice grips method, but my screws were rusted and wouldn't break loose that way. You might want to give that try first. You might have better luck.

Re: removing windows and window felt strips

I found that by removing the front support for the window and removing the inner felt pads I was able to get to that weatherstripping a lot easier. The window is still on its tracks with the exception for that front sail thingy not in place ( cant think of the name atm, its 2:30 in the morning)
