With that 350 and 3:73 gears you should fair well with the imports.

Re: Did u have a Thirdgen in highschool?
I drove my '90 Formula350 TPI setup in high school. I got it Sophmore or Junior year as an early graduation gift (2001). Dad originally wanted me to get a Green Bonneville. I wanted the Formula. The heater core exploded on me within a month after getting it. I did some bolt-ons: MSD 6AL, Shift Kit, headers, exhaust, delete CAT, SFC, LCAs, Brackets other little things. Eventually after working all summer in a factory next to a 1000* oven I afforded the ProBuilt Transmission and the 2400 RPM Stall.
Nothing really that fast around school (small town of 600 Population). A supercharged GTP, 70 Chevelle, and a slightly built 305 Malibu.
Prior to what everyone usually does I wasn't allowed to have a part time job, but I bought my own gas, tires, insurance, and upgrades. I quickly learned labor on things were expensive.
Soon after high school their '90 Buick Century broke down in the driveway where it sat there for months and I was told if I could get it running I could have it. At that point I'd be taking apart the Firebird so much pulling apart fuel rails and cleaning things out were easy. I had it running in under 30 minutes. Then I had two cars to take care of, but cheaper insurance that way.

I graduated in 02 and the only muscle cars I've seen at the high school since was a 73 mustang, 70 cutlass and a 96 mystic Cobra. The kid with the cobra, his dad owns the local ford dealership. My class was loaded with muscle, (for a class of about 400) my 92 camaro, 96 Z28, 70 monte drag car, 66 chevelle 454 SS, 79 Hurst Olds, and a late 70s-early 80s cutlass with a built 400.
With that 350 and 3:73 gears you should fair well with the imports.

Wish there was more of a muscle car scene here. I often find myself hanging out with guys three times my age as they are the only ones around still supporting the muscle cars! Junior Member

Re: Did u have a Thirdgen in highschool?
Luck to have it, its just the insurance and stuff that makes guys now go with the Hondas and stuff... I'm 19 and it costs me 413 a month without any tickets ever just for insurance let alone the 85 bucks in gas I burn a week. Half the time I have to skip eating dinner because I needed to feed the Trans Am

I paid $130/mo in high school for full coverage. Funny thing was when i bought my 99 3.8L camaro it was more $ , had a higher ratingthan the 92 but was completely inferior to the 92. But skipping meals to "feed the trans am" is true thirdgen love. Re: Did u have a Thirdgen in highschool?
Well i'm to old to have had a Gen 3 but i did have a Gen 1,Gen 2 when i was in school granted that they were not in great shape but was fast as hell. When the show The Dukes of Haz. came out i had to jump my Gen 2 over some rail road tracks and well lets just say it flew but the landing was not pretty. LOL

Also I owned a few f bodies during high school, Grade 9 I found a 1988 Firebird Formula which I really wanted, had flames on the hood, t tops, 5.0l 5spd, bugger sold it the day I had the cash, so I settled for a 1988 RS with a beefed up 2.8l made about 190hp went like a bat out of hell with those 4.10 gears. 0 - 40km I mean ahaha. Second was a 1986 T/A in grade 11 that I couldn't afford the gas in making $10 and hour and 12 hours a week, and third a 1997 Firebird V6 that a lady totalled in November, and fourth and final a blue 1984 h.o 305 Z28..

I couldn't afford a camaro in high school but I bought my first one (82 Z28) as soon as I graduated and got a job. I ordered a brand new teal 91 RS a couple years later with a 5 speed and the gutless LO3 V8 but i had fun with it anyway.

Re: Did u have a thirgen in highschool?
I drove my mom's 1990 Firebird (3.1L V6) in middle school. I lived in the Lake Travis Area in Spicewood, TX - So there was really nobody out there that would say anything about driving without a license.
When I turned 15, I got a hardship license and bought a well used 1984 Camaro Berlinetta that needed work from this older (30 something) girl that lived in my neighborhood. The car had a 2 barrel 283 with a TH350 trans and a ratchet shifter. Exhaust was headers into flex-pipe into cherry bombs. lol The TQ arm was also missing the bracket at the tail shaft. I had to make one using exhaust clamps and sway bar bushings. Later I bought a 1983 Camaro Z28 with the blue "camaro" interior and 5 speed. T-Top car in good shape and 4 wheel discs. I should have kept it.

Re: Did u have a Thirdgen in highschool?
I got my first car exactly one month before I turned 18, and 5 weeks before I graduated high school. My first ride was an '84 Z28. 3 years later the most expensive '84 Z28 ever. New engine after the original locked up 3 months after I got it, tranny rebuild 2 months after the new engine, ANOTHER tranny rebuild one month after the 12 month warranty expired
, and it's been towed at least 9 times. All that including the original purchase price of the car ($2500 back in 1999), I spent over $13,000 over the three years I owned it. By the time I sold it, only the front left brake worked, overdrive didn't work, park barely worked, emergency brake didn't work, no AC, no power steering, dents all over the body from me punching it lol. I just gave up on it after the 2nd tranny rebuild. I ended up selling it to a kid that worked at Auto Zone for like $400 or something stupid haha.

15 years later I found the one I always wanted anyway

Re: Did u have a Thirdgen in highschool?
My junior year in 94 i traded for an 87 Formula. Red with black interior ,gold wheels, Lg4 with an auto. I added some performance parts to it and took it from a 15.8 to 14.8sec car. I was hooked. Lots of fun with it. After parting ways with it ive had 4 other 3rd gens. My aunt bought a brand new IROC when they first came out and i guess it left a big impression on me as a lil kid. Its nice to get on TGO and see all the other folks that are passionate about these cars as well.

Re: Did u have a Thirdgen in highschool?
Got my first third gen in 1994 when I was 19 in the service. It was a 1987 Iroc 305 quadrajet 700R4 hardtop car. It had the overhead console with the little flashlight and some useless little click wheel numbers for keeping track of mileage or something. I remember that flashlight flying out of the console when you hit a big bump. I've heard of other cars with that strange option but I've never actually seen another one. I sold it in 1999 and then saw it a few months later driving down a local highway with what looked like 13 or 14 inch Dayton gold wire spoke rims on it, some chrome tape on the lower doors and gas cap and a very tacky crown air freshener on the dash. Broke my heart.
Re: Did u have a Thirdgen in highschool?
Wow....graduated in '69 so no 3rd gen for me! Bought my '87 IROC new June of '87 (3 month delay with strike) getting ready for 4th engine swap... Still love my car and this site is fantastic!
Thanks_

Re: Did u have a Thirdgen in highschool?
My first car was an 87 formula (yellow gold) with an LT1 swap, ported heads and a hotcam. Stupidly got rid of it for a 93 formula with a t56...did some swapping of motors, then sold that and bought a 91 GTA. GTA was a show car, $3000 paint 12 years ago and everything under the hood polished. Sold it to my brother and he totalled it. That's the story of my high school days. Since I got rid of the 87 I've been looking for another third gen formula. Found the one last year and I'll probably die before I sell it. My brother drove an 87 GTA for his first car. I love thirdgens and would have 10 if I could afford it. Third gen formulas are one of the coolest/prettiest cars to me.

Yep, I did. Got my 1st third gen when I was 17. It was a 1984, with a 350/th-350 swapped in. Edelbrock performer intake, Q jet, 462 double hump heads. I added hooker shorty headers, dual 2.25" pipes and flowmaster 2 chamber mufflers. VDO tach, autometer gauges, B&M mega shifter
Re: Did u have a Thirdgen in highschool?
The summer of my freshman year I bought my first car, a 1980 Audi 5000, straight 5. The middle cylinder had fueling problems unless you were hard in the throttle, never could get it running right. Sold it.
The summer after my sophomore year I bought a 1982 Firebird SE for locally for $500. The thing was way mint condition (this was 1997). Had no engine though. The same guy had a FI V6 from a 1986 Camaro tho for $500. Even though I had everything to rebuild the Firebirds engine I bought the Camaro engine and put the 1982 carb setup on it for smog. Passed oddly enough but never ran well because of the FI cam it had. I also had to soon after hit a junkyard for a tranny and got a first year 700R4 from an 83 Trans Am. I had more adventures and mishaps in that car than most people do in a lifetime, I loved it. Lost my virginity in that car, met my best friend because it broke down, you name it.
When I finally blew the engine (off-roading, hole in oil pan = bearings toast) I traded it for a 1960 El Camino SS right before graduation. Always regretted selling that car. I still have the license plate, keys, and a fender emblem from it along with a couple other parts like the original 3-spd auto gear indicator and the fuse panel cover. Mementos I suppose.
Fast forward to only a year or 2 after that (July 1st 2000) and I finally found the 1992 Trans Am GTA of my dreams and bought it. The 82 SE was the inspiration for me to get the last year thirdgen Firebird in the top trim level. Almost 15years later I still haven't repeated my mistake thank god!

Had two. Graduated in 2002.
84 Z28 L69 5 speed, first registered car. Swapped the whole drivetrain out with hand tools. Learned so much on that car. Was rear ended by a girl not paying attention... while I was stopped for a school bus letting kids off :/
88 Iroc-Z LB9 5 speed, huge project, replaced tons of stuff, rotted away on me.

Currently in highschool now, I own a 25th anniversary z28. Picked it up for 4 grand at a good guys car show. One owner, never seen snow, and only has 100k miles. Besides a tank of gas I got as a birthday present, every dime put in the car was paid for by me.

Awesome car! Always liked that color scheme. Not many cars like yours at your school I bet. My son is your age he drives an 86 Monte Carlo. After college he wants a blue/silver Iroc. Ima make that happen for him
