quarter panels... how to remove?

i have a 92 RS with very little rust, the underbody, fenders, trunkwell and everything are nice, it's just my driver side quarter panel that is rusted. i was wondering what would be best to cut it off with... a grinder or a saws-all? or if they make a special tool just to takem off? help please... pics soon

Your quarters are held on with many spot welds. You can't just take them off like a fender. This is something for someone who really knows what they are doing. What are your intentions?

the only quarter panel i'll have to cut off is the drivers side, the other is just fender buldge on the otherside. i'm just planing to takem off and weld new ones on, then repaint. The reason im doin it is because its the only body i have to do one my car. everything on the outer body is great exept thos 2 spots, and the floor boards and underchasis just has surface rust on it. I'd say it looks pretty good for a Minnesota car! but i'm tired of seeing the rust spot.

Whats a cut off wheel? do you mean cut off the whelle whell or is it a tool?
sorry. i'm not mechaninc

Re: quarter panels... how to remove?

If your not careful and "don't worry" about cutting it you will have very big problems later if you want it to look factory original when your done. This is not something to do on your own if you don't have any experience on doing this. Best off to take it to a qualified body shop so it is done right the first time. Like bodybyfischer asked, what are your intentions and do you have any bodywork experience??

Cut off wheel is a tool.. Maybe theres a more technical name... But well. I don't care. Cut off wheel is how everyone says it. But all thats to it is an air powered tool with a wheel on it that has abrasives and it well "cuts"

Re: quarter panels... how to remove?

If you don't know what a cutoff wheel is, I think I'm not going out on a limb by saying that this project is likely to be WAY past your current skill level. I'd seriously reconsider doing this yourself, or at least try a bit less ambitious project and just replace the rusted area and not the whole quarter.

Re: quarter panels... how to remove?

is this area to big for patch panels? and yea replacing a panel isnt as easy as one may think? ive been doing autobody repair for a couple of years now and i still hate doin it. i also agree it is not something a novice should try. you might be able to do your own patch panels hence my question asking if the area is to big for a patch panel.

no, it can be patched but i was just thinking of replacing the whole thing just to be safe. I was origanly going to take it to a shop, but i was just wondering if i could do it myslef and it not be to hard. But i'll probly take it to a shop seeing that is wat everyone is saying. How much would they charg??

Re: quarter panels... how to remove?

i dont know as for price, im not sure as to how many hours the shop manual said it should take. if you could find out how many hours it should be done then multipy it by around 80 dollars then you have a rough estimate. although i dont know the average hourly rate in your area. Or better yet just call around and ask specifically for your car and that would be much easier and simple. if school was in right now i could find out for you tomorrow but im on a week long break right now.

Re: quarter panels... how to remove?

alright, so the rust spots are patchable. should i consider doing it myself or have a proffesional, the rust spots are on the fenders and about a 6inch long by 2inch wide spot by the separated part of the spoiler on the driver side. my friend can lone me his welder and other tools i need.
