power bulge hood. i have a ?
as some of u may know i am getting/got (haven't got her home yet) an 84 t/a. it has a functioning bulge hood. not sure if the acuator works, but i was wondering at what point in throtteling does it open up? like 1/2 or wot or whatever.
i had an 84 t/a about 10 years ago and it was not functional as far as a vacuum actuator. i did a search but can't find anything on this. sorry if i did miss the post on this. i am a firm believer in searching before posting.
thanks guys.
jay.

its electric, it operates via a solenoid, afaik theres a switch linked to the gas pedal or the throttle somewhere to open it at WOT

Re: power bulge hood. i have a ?
I recently installed a functioning hood from an '84 on my '89 TBI car, but without the functioning parts. I left the grille open, and I added a modified L69 air cleaner assembly with a stock-fitting K&N X-Stream lid. It's like a combination L69/open element air cleaner.
So while I can't address when the functioning set-up specifically opens-up, I can say that when I get on the gas, there's a very noticeable increase in the sound of the air rushing into the throttle body, and it's freakin' LOUD!
That happens anytime I accelerate from a constant cruising speed range(which would usually involve the tranny kicking down from OD, I suppose). So my guess would be that the functioning system would open anytime like that, too, rather than at a specific rpm or speed(although it would prolly remain open after a certain rpm or speed).

Re: power bulge hood. i have a ?
I have an 82 Camaro with the LU5 Crossfire engine and the functional hood scoops. The scoops are operated by a signal from the ECM to a realy. The ECM senses WOT, based on the TPS signal (Throttle Position Signal) and energizes the coil to the relay. A contact closes on the relay and provides power to the solenoid operator which opens the hood scoops.
The aux relay is the same as the Fuel Pump Relay in contact arrangement and operation. I can post a connection diagram if you would like to see it.
If you have a carbed engine, you will have to determine what WOT is based on your carb setup. Probably the best way to do this is with a limit switch that closes when the carb valves are open beyond a set point. Use that signal to drive an aux realy and the aux realy contact to power the solenoid.
