quality hood pins
Hey i would like to find a set of quality classic style hood pins, do not have to come with hood pins.
had a set of the cheapo mr gasket ones but within a week of being on the car they got a little rust inside the hole on the pin and then the rust started to spread around the pin. Looking for somethign thats a higher quality piece

Re: quality hood pins
Do Quality hood pins even exist? I think they look tacky, out of taste, and useless. Stick with the stock hinges IMO. But, hey, we're all different. Good luck!
Re: quality hood pins
Search around on SummitRacing.com for "hood pin". They have aluminum, stainless steel, and chrome plated aluminum hood pins. Any of those should not do what you are complaining about, which seems to be typical of the cheap-o pins. I would personally opt for the stainless ones.

Re: quality hood pins
anyone have thoughts on the benefits of stainless vs aluminum?

and heres a pick, the cables have since been removed and i like it a lot better with just the pins. I would actually like to remove the stock latch and the underside of he hood around it to make room for a cold air intake. Then its cool looking and functional. And i already have holes in my iroc hood so its too late for that debate anyways

I would have to say hood pins are a necessity when dealing with fiberglass hoods. The whole point is if for whatever reason your hood latch lets go you have atleast 2 points still keeping it from tearing itself right of the hinge locations and smashing the persons car behind you

Re: quality hood pins
huh. In the past my dillemma was i wanted to remove the stock latch, put pins in, but then id have to find some other way of locking the hood. When ever i looked at locking pins they said in big bold print "these are not to be used for the purpose of securing the hood.
these mr gasket ones dont tho...
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku
would those pins be acceptable for being the only points of securing the front of my hood?

SUPER SECURITY HOOD LOCK
This kit uses a virtually pick-proof cylindrical key lock mechanism. Includes 2 chrome-plated lock sets, two lock pins with 4 nuts and 2 keys. NOT for use as the only hood retention mechanism.
that answers that one, guess ill have to try some stainless pins and hope that works out ok, and figure out some other way of locking the hood, and im not running 4 pins

Re: quality hood pins
the factory air box pinches super thin because of where the stock latch is. Hard to run a cai anywhere except to the battery tray, already ran a battery relocation kit outside the car and toasted the wire.
so if i could run hood pins on each corner and a cai over the rad by cutting out the underside of the hood in that area, id probably have anough room to run an ls1/ls6 air lid

Re: quality hood pins
where did this come from.
i want to do it partly because ive always wanted hood pins but whats the point in having pins if theyre not functional. Plus it gives me an excuse to run an awesome CAI infront of the rad

Re: quality hood pins
My 70 T/A came with them from the factory with my fiberglass hood. They were designed for fiberglass hoods. The round plate that mounts to the hood is not flat but raised using a rubber washer under it to protect the hood. IMO looks much better. Using a raised plate helps to prevent the pin from scratching your paint.

Re: quality hood pins
lol got any pics or idea where to get em?
everything ive found on summit is garbage
found some on the net that are from a stock car racing website, like 4 bucks a pin for whatever length stainless pin you need, probably my best bet

Re: quality hood pins
I had an AWESOME dual CAI using the stock filler panel. No need to relocate the battery or delete any other pieces off my camaro. I still was able to use the square air cleaners as well. I'll try to peek around to see if I can find some pics.

Re: quality hood pins
thats the whole idea, my only problem with the stock air box is where it pinches super thin and is massively restrictive. It does that cause of the bracing around the latch, so if i get rid of that i can run something like what you said
for sure if you have pics lets see them

Re: quality hood pins
i am using hood pins on my car. It will be a street strip car when im done. i wasnt originally planning on running hood pins even though i have a aftermarket hood but when you go to the track and see a car get totally demolished from hitting the wall because the hood flys up you tend to think twice. some say it looks tacky some say they look awesome. i for one like them but they are more of a safety precaution rather than a fashion statement. just my .02

yea i hate the tacky look too

I have the stainless ones from summit, but mine isn't a daily driver so I have no idea on rust issues.

Re: quality hood pins
hood pins are not likely to let go of the hood, theres no way for them to release and its not like im worried about the pin ripping out of the rad support.
i work on a 500 ton mobile crane with 300+ feet of main boom and that whole thing is held together by metal pins with locking pins on either end. I'm comfortable in a pin holding my hood down.
not to mention you kind of contradict yourself, the fact that you think they look tacky had little to do with the rest of your statement but you threw it in the sentence anyways lol
and i already have two holes drilled in the hood of my car so its a little late for debating wether it looks good or not

Autozone sells spectre hood pins that are all stainless steel. The pin, hardware, all of it, is stainless. They are 12.99

Re: quality hood pins
I saw a set on a local board last year that were black composite and had almost a doorhandle quality to them. You could buy lockable or just standard but they were closer to teardrop shaped and you just pressed them in to release the latch mechanism. Kind of like the old 70's vette doorhandles.

I previously had the regular style "hair pin" type, but then I got the torrison pins, which I think, are much better and easier to work with... and I think the torrison clips "look better" on our type of cars... since I think of torrison clips as a more "advanced" version of the hair pin.... just like thirdgens are a more "advancement" of traditional muscle cars of the 60's...

only thing on summit is the nicest version of the torsion clips was a "mustang kit"

Re: quality hood pins
unless the pins actually have a Ford or pony logo, then I don't think they are mustang specific. As long as its the basic hardware, you can most likely use it on your Camaro...
