need somthing to get out light sirface rust

as most of you in the midwest kno we have gotten little snow, but the salt trucks dont seem to care, they have laid down salt every day for a few weeks straight. the salt has ripped the wax clean off my car over the past month or so.Now surface rust is starting to set in. I was woundering if any of you know of any products i can use to get it off soon? thanks

theres stuff like rust converter that they sell at any auto store and even walmart that turns rust into black primer. or you could sand the rust off.

rust guite like anything only gets worse with time. even if you cant do anthing with it today I would sugesst at least throwing a quick coat of wax or something on it before the rust has any more time to set in. this will help slow the oxidation process a bit and give you time to fix it proper. when you go to paint back over it though ensure you strip the wax off with a stripper and then some rubbing alcohol with a clean tack rag. this has worked for me on other cars in the past and kept the rust from getting worse till i could get to it

rust converter is a good idea but remove as much rust as you can with wire brush, sand paper, what ever it takes before you use the converter. another thing i have been told is that wax holds up better if you just apply it and dont wipe off the haze. you may want to try waxing the bottom of the car and not buffing out the haze.

Re: need somthing to get out light sirface rust

this is exactly why you park your nicer rides and drive the winter beaters when you live in the midwest here

once rust is through the paint then it is all over

too late

it will only get worse from there

should have been not driving it in the snow and salt

start sanding and prep for new paint

ship it to FL GA AR TX MS NV NM CA for the winters

even KY TN SC NC OK and such are way better than up here

lots less snow and salt than up here by FAR

everything rusts eventually in most locations

nothing much you can do esxcept store them away dry over winter

if you drive it then it will rust

good luck!

Some of us can't afford to have a winter beater , so at least offer some good advice, other than "don't drive your car in the winter.

Assuming (hopefully) you don't have awesome/perfect paint, use a wire wheel if the rust is really thick, but if it is surface rust sand it off. After that give it a coat (or two) of rattle can primer until you can either spray something else or paint the entire car.

You need primer and also primer sealer.... You can still get rust with plain jane primer.

Re: need somthing to get out light sirface rust

something that worked great for me is something called a flap disk. You use it on your angle disk grinders. It's multiple layers of sandpaper stacked up in a disk formation, worked great for me, comes in multiple grits so that you can do course to get hard rust off and then use a finer grit to smooth it out. This will not tear into your metal like a grinding disk or cutting disk, it will just scuff up the surface and take the paint and rust away in seconds. Afterwards I've heard of using epoxy primer any time you get any metal down to bare metal, but i have always used etching primer, not sure if they are one in the same, but it's a suggestion if you got the tools. Otherwise sand it down ASAP, it's never too late to save it, IF done right...you can stop anything, you just have to catch it early enough. Good luck!!
