Removing heavy front bumper support

Has anyone removed the front bumper support from their Camaro? The thing weighs a ton and is hanging right on the front of the car. I want to remove it but don't want the front end to distort at speed and would like to keep the lights that are attached to it. Maybe cut out just the center of it and the far outside and keep the parts that mounts the lights. Any experience with this out there?

Not sure if you are talking about the crush bumper or bumper support. The bumper/light support is not heavy and has to be there. Crush bumper can be removed but next time you crash you will have lots more damage than with crush bumper
this picture is with the crush bumper removed with bumper back on:

and here is the picture with the crush bumper removed but the headlight bar in place(bumper off)

light/bumper support bar by itself

crush bumper (damaged)

I want remove the part on the ground in the last picture. It's bolted to the end of the frame and it's heavy.

Re: Removing heavy front bumper support

Its held in by 4x 13mm nuts on each framehorn

It is a VERY important safety item and will likely save your life in a head-on collision

If you do remove it, put something back in there

Re: Removing heavy front bumper support

Like previously stated.....VERY IMPORTANT function for that piece. IF you remove it do something like Andris Skulte has done or something even beefier. I say beefier because I think his car is only a track car now. You take that piece out and you've taken pretty much the first defense in a front impact. If that part isn't there you don't have any other steel to help other than your frame and etc.

Re: Removing heavy front bumper support

i believe camaros and firebirds did at one point come with aluminum bumper supports, can't give you any info past that, just know they are out there. Saved a lot of weight in the front.

As mentioned above, i would NOT suggest running around without anything up there for the sheer fact in the act of an accident, i'm willing to bet an insurance company will not cover you. It's a law, you don't need the bumper cover but you do need the bumper support. (NY at least)

Re: Removing heavy front bumper support

Some 82-84 Fbodys came with the aluminum impact bar

The weight difference is noticeable but not something major

Re: Removing heavy front bumper support

just a thought if he wanted to shave some pounds, hand in hand i've heard it is noticable, but i would assume it illegal to remove the bar all together, so every pound shed is good at this point.

I'm not sure it can be used with the later bumper covers though. I've not tried the swap, but comparing the two, it doesn't look like it will work.

Re: Removing heavy front bumper support

Ive read direct swap, ive read you have to cut a few inches off each side

Either way its very easy and pointless

Don't risk your life trying to save weight. It isn't that heavy anyway.

Re: Removing heavy front bumper support

replace with aluminum or steel pipe so that you have some protection but not all...i didn't know it was just track...but as mentioned above, you hit the wall, you got NOTHING to protect you, if you put a bar across where that huge steel bar is...you at least have some protection and the front can behave as it should in an impact.
