About to Apply Por -15
Tomorrow im going to apply por 15 to the underneath of my 92 camaro. Ive already took a drill and a rust removal disc and got all the loose rust off but ive got a few questions. Its still pretty rusty under there and was wondering if its ok to paint the por 15 over it. Also do i need to clean the surface with anything? In addition do i need to paint over the por 15 after its dryed to protect it?

Re: About to Apply Por -15
Well, i have never used por-15 but I read it needs to have something painted on top to keep it from fading to UV rays.
Also, to take off surface rust (not major rot or anything) get some little 3" 3m "surface conditioning discs" they look like little scotch-brite pads but are rough and harder. Use them on a 90* die grinder.

BACK TO SUBJECT PLEASE.
Ben92,I would also reccomend using the por-15 marine clean.
But if the rust under there is still pretty bad (after your cleanup with a whire wheel) sounds to me like you have some more work to do before even thinking about applying the por-15.

Re: About to Apply Por -15
judging by those pics,I would definately reccomend the por-15 marine clean.
And in the 2nd pic you posted above,I would remove that panel that appears to be bolted on. I can't tell from that pic but looks like a heat shield for the fuel tank or something. I say that because you really want to get (ALL) the rust out of there or you're just throwing away your time and money.

Re: About to Apply Por -15
On the web site it shows that por-15 likes a little rusted unpainted surfaces. I used it on the undercarriage of my car and it works well.If you have no rust-though then just follow the direction, use the cleaner, surface prep and por-15 from the web site and it will take care of your rust problem. And yea, if you get it on you or anything else it will stay on you for at least a week.

Re: About to Apply Por -15
Not to hijack the thread or anything but,
Is it okay to apply por-15 to a surface that was recently ground down with a wire wheel and stripped of all rust without any of the prep products they have? I am about to do this same thing after patching some rust but i was just going to spring for the por-15 from the napa down the street, they dont seem to cary any of the prep products. And also cant por-15 be applied over lightly rusted areas to contain the spread of rust?

Re: About to Apply Por -15
the rust in those pictures is pretty widespread and thick. More than I thought. I would get out the DA and some 80 grit and sand it down, then use surface prep discs after that.
As for the prep, again I cant say for sure. But I can say is, if you decide not to use any prep products I would say at least give it a good wipe down with wax&grease remover.

Re: About to Apply Por -15
I have had good results but it is critical to use the metal prep and then wipe down with a degreaser, POR sells it as Marine Clean. As for the rust you need all of the loose flaky stuff off the surface, the metal prep will turn tightly adhering rust into a black hard compund and let the POR hold tight.
Wear good rubber gloves, it took a week to get it off my hands where the glove tore. If under the car make sure to have eye and face protection as well. They also have a really good 2 part epoxy putty to fill small holes or imperfections that works really well.

Re: About to Apply Por -15
I've used POR15 numerous times over the last 6 years. Their engine block paint, black rust encapsulator paints, marine clean etc. Like everyone is pointing to....simply read the easy instructions and follow them. Use a wire brush to scrape any loose rust scales off, clean the surface off really well with the marine clean, hose it off...wait for it to dry then spray with the self etching spray (Metal Ready) and then once that's dry apply your coatings, probably need 2. You can lay the 2nd coat down once the 1st coat is tacky to the touch. Also, you can brush it on but I found it alot easier to use those foam brushes from Home Cheapo.
Re: About to Apply Por -15
When I redid my old 71 Dodge Demon I bet I used 2 gallons of por15. I sprayed it on the underside that had some surface rust as pictured above. Did as you did and just wire brushed the scale off then applied it. Spraying it on gets a more consistant flow, but I also brushed it on inside all panels. I even sandblasted all chassis parts then brushed this stuff on. Even though they don't recomend applying to blasted parts, It worked great.

Re: About to Apply Por -15
I havent used it b4 but im going to use por-15 on the flore of my car and my prep work will be the same as i have done every other minor rust area
1: Paint Striper (if there is any paint there).
2: Chemical Rust Remover (turns rust black and easy to remove)
3: Angle Grinder with Wire Wheel.
4: Wipe with paint thiner to clean surface.
5: Then brush on the Por-15.
But im trying to get this car to near perfict condition so im putting alot of detail in to my work.
