Door Skin?!?!?!?!

is it posible to remove just the door skin on the drivers door and replace it, so you dont have to replace the whole door, so that way i can keep my matching VIN's.

My drivers door got raped by a female driver

I believe aftermarket is the only way to get them, I seem to remember hearing that GM has discontinued them.....

Re: Door Skin?!?!?!?!

Or you could cut out and weld the section w/ the vin tag onto another door. I'd do that before I'd skin a door, which will cost a fortune and is not going to be a 1 day job.

Re: Door Skin?!?!?!?!

price and time isnt an huge issue, i want matching vins and it look normal, but im putting a junk yard door on and repainting the car for now just to make it cheaper and faster, but saving my factory OEM door and later on down the road i will re skin it and re install it, anyone know of a cheaper place to get a skin? Classic is $382, would like to spend about $250 for the skin, but if i have to i will pay the $382 from Classic

Re: Door Skin?!?!?!?!

Since you are doing this for correctness, I would be asking, who sells the best quality skin. and forget what it costs. A lot of the repro parts for these cars, fenders, hoods, etc, fit TERRIBLE. I have had an aftermarket hood, nose, fenders, etc and they all fit pretty bad. They were all overseas made repro's. You do not want a China/Taiwan stamped piece of sheet metal on a good car, if you can at all help it.

Re: Door Skin?!?!?!?!

http://www.autobodyspecialt.com/

has full OEM and repro full skins for 82-92 firebirds only. For camaros, they only have a lower 8" repro skin. I don't know what the diff. is between a firebird and camaro door but there must be one if they list them separately.

It might just be because I am an auto body tech, but skinning a door is easy and doesn't take very long at all. You should check the door though and see if the intrusion beams on the inside are bent. If they are you should replace the whole door.

Re: Door Skin?!?!?!?!

I used to live in CT so I would go pick parts up from Auto Body Specialties locally and save tons and tons on shipping. I'm sure that the repro lower patch panel is going to need some body and metal work to get it to fit right, but if you absolutely must keep your door it sounds like your only option.

Or, couldn't you get a donor door and make a patch panel out of it? That way you'd be working with sheet metal that would be of the same quality.

Re: Door Skin?!?!?!?!

for the cost of whole doors in junkyards near me ($30/each), it's definitely worth a try. I hope you weld, although this sounds like a repair that could be flanged and panel bonded if you had to.

Re: Door Skin?!?!?!?!

to my knowledge there was never a difference. I got camaro doors on my firebird right now and other than the color i don't think you could tell the difference 10 feet away or 10 inches away, no visible differences to me. I feel bad now, i've told and read that they are identical...other than body kit holes...is there infact a difference?!

Re: Door Skin?!?!?!?!

Re: Door Skin?!?!?!?!

thats the only difference to my knowledge between Firebird and Camaro doors, is the ground effect holes. Of which like i said, i got 88 RS doors on my firebird right now, filled in the holes and filled in the mirror holes, and everything matches up and is perfectly smooth, so i'm going to continue to assume they are identical.

No matter what skin you get, you'll have to drill the gfx holes.
How bad is the damage on your original?
You already said it was only on the lower (8" area) so I would say to repair the damage while the junkyard piece was paying rent.

Re: Door Skin?!?!?!?!

I have also seen a camaro w/ firebird doors on it. it was a total beater POS so I can't tell you if the door looked correct, but it did fit. It had trans am ground effects on it and the camaro had Z28 ground effects on it. GHETTO. lol. I would just buy the firebird full skin from autobodyspecialt since it is so cheap (what is it, like $135) and then take your old skin off and compare them. Worst case scenario you have to modify the skin or end up using it as a patch panel. For that price its certainly worth a shot.
