horrible vibration

Since the day i got my car (87 iroc) the car vibrates really really bad at about 60+. now i know i need to replace a few front end parts as well as get new tires, but the door doesnt close right. it shakes prett bad too at that speed if i hit a bump. it also looks like its not closing all the way. what could that be? once in a while someone wont close the passenger side door and then that door shakes violently too at about the same speed. that makes me think that despite the front end issues the door is the main problem for the violent shaking. what could it be?

Re: horrible vibration

sounds to me like your driveing an accident waiting to happen . rebuild entire front end , new tires and alignment . then worry about the doors . hope you don't continue to drive it on public roads if all you say is true .

Re: horrible vibration

I'd say the vibrating is because of 20+ year old suspension parts, I agree with uncle tom. as for the door not closing its probably your door pins, are your doors hard to shut (you need to slam them?)

Re: horrible vibration

I read somewhere (may have been on here?) that the doors are heavily reinforced to help the body resist cracking. idk, but this could be a source of vibration if it's not doing its job properly? maybe someone can help me out with this. btw, if the front end parts need replaced, replace them (no harm done in spending your money) then if the prob persists, look into the door.

Re: horrible vibration

ya i decided to take the car off the road. the front end definitely needs to be replaced. but the door issue is also a concern for me well because of how bad it vibrates and shakes during driving and on bumps. if it is the door pins how hard is it to fix? anyone else have this problem?

Re: horrible vibration

the door pins would make it really hard to close the door, so unless your door is hard to close I wouldnt worry about them. your door shaking is probably the 20+ year old suspension parts, so rebuild your front end, get everything aligned and then see how your doors are while driving.

Re: horrible vibration

nah the door is pretty easy to close but it definatly doesnt close tight the way its supposed to. is there a front end kit i can get that comes with everything? i just bought pads rotors and a caliper from autozone. pads were 35 rotor was 40 and the caliper...11 lol. eventually im gonna upgrade the entire brake set up including going from drum to disk in the rear so for now those cheapos from autozone should be fine. but the front end stuff i do want to get better quality now. any ideas

Re: horrible vibration

I don't know that the right way to go about this is to throw all new parts on it. Like deekscamaro said, an unbalanced drive shaft can cause a nasty vibration all by itself, why replace every other part too?

I think first you need to make sure you know where it's coming from. I'll admit I'm not an expert on tracking down a vibration, so someone correct me if I mess something up. As far as I've experienced, a vibration in the front will make your steering wheel shake and a vibration in the drive shaft/back will just shake the whole car (notice I made no mention to doors vibrating because they aren't the cause). You can swap wheels front to back and see if it changes/eliminate wheel/tire balancing. So where do you think it's coming from, if the whole car just violently shakes I'm with Deek on the driveshaft.

Re: horrible vibration

please take it to or have someone come to you and check out the suspension . NO SLAM , but it seems to me that you are not well versed on suspension . once again , no slam . ck. ball joints , tie rods , idler arm , center link , strut mounts , shocks , and all bushings . everything in the frontend . then an alightment , it has been 21yrs. since your car was new . check and fix the obvious , if stock driveshaft , it should be fine . do the obvious first . you will be supprised . good luck , i think you need it .

Re: horrible vibration

Im actually pretty good with suspension stuff. ive been a mechanic for some tme now. i checked it today actually. i took it to my friends shop and we didnt see anything out of the ordinary. the tie rod on the driver side had some play but nothing crazy. the pass side was tight. it has a new idler pitman and center link. ball joints were ok. the struts are kinda worn. overall we didnt see anything that was bad enough that would cause such a bad vibration. im starting to lean toward the driveshaft though. i never really thought about it or noticed it until formy mentioned it, but on my way home i noticed the steering wheel doesnt shake. well it shakes but barely and only really cuz the car is shaking. what if i were to put the rear up on jack stands and roll it til about 60-65. thats when the vibration starts.

Re: horrible vibration

even if it is the stock driveshaft it could be damaged. it could be bad u-joints too.

Re: horrible vibration

Well if I were you I'd take off your driveshaft and have it balanced or replace it with an aluminum ls1 shaft, depending on which route you want to take or which is less costly. You figure even if it's not out of whack no harm no foul right? I would still go ahead and do a suspension overhaul, new bushings, front end components and replace your worn out struts/springs/shocks. I am the type of person that would rather spend the extra money to replace the old with a new and improved peice, but to each their own.

The symptoms you described does sound like an unbalanced drive shaft, so check into that before you do anything else, also, I wouldn't recommend putting your car on jack stands and rolling to 60mph, the results can be disasterious if your car was to fall off.

Re: horrible vibration

My car vibrates pretty bad at 70mph. I think the driveshaft might need to be balanced. I read that these cars are notorious for bad balance on the driveshafts from the factory.

Also though, the highway itself causes alot of "vibration" in these cars. Most highways, if you ever see them in the rain or something, you will notice that they are not perfectly flat. The surface is all highs and lows that make puddles.

When I first got the car, I thought the vibration was horrible. Then, I stumbled across a stretch of highway at 70mph, and the vibration stopped immediately when I hit the new asphalt. I think these cars have such stiff springs, they pick up every little imperfection in the road.

Re: horrible vibration

Ya i definatly plan on updating the entire front end. for now im gonna throw the energy suspension stuff at it. eventually i wanna update it to the 4th gen suspension but that wont be for a while. as far as the driveshaft, how much would one of those LS1 driveshafts cost at a junk yard or online? do they fit right or would i have to modify it at all?
