Busted door glass

Hey guys I was replacing my drivers door hinge bushings and i closed the door by the glass, my hand shot straight through and the rest is history. The question is is it possible to get the glass out of a junk yard car and install it? I would just replace the whole door because the bottom is rotted a little the glass in the mirror is busted and the black plastic that seals the corner near the mirror is busted but I want the paint to match till I get the whole car painted. The glass company wants $265 just for the glass, what would you do?(the car is not insured right now)

If there's that much wrong with the door, I'd get another one. I'm thinking about doing that myself before I go in for paint. I have manual windows now and I've thought about switching both doors out for some electric ones. I would also be interested to hear some opinions...

Re: Busted door glass

my car wont see paint any time soon maybe I'll get the door now though but can i change the glass from one to another? i have power windows

it was recently painted by some hack who over sprayed all over the place and didn't prep well to the paint flaked in multiple places
ill take it down to the original paint then block it and spray it black ill probably do the door jams and everything.

Re: Busted door glass

I'd like to know that also. My bumpers were shot on my 89 and let the glass go down below the trim bolts causing the glass to chip on the top. Can the window glass be replaced without damageing my new paint? I found replacements glass at JY for $60. Thanks

Re: Busted door glass

yes it can and it is very easy
if you go to a JY take off the door pan.
2 drill out the rivets that hold the window in i think there is 4 or them
3 pop the plastic clips that hold the window in, out.

"the rivets you are drilling out are in the center of the plastic clips"

And when you replace the doors, you can just swap the glass back!

There isn't really a "manual door" or "power door' all doors are the same its not worth swapping doors just for power options, i added power locks, hatch, windows, without changing doors. heres the site i used: http://www.p71interceptor.com/thirdgen/powerwindows/ Taking a door off is a no-no. its so hard to ever line up different ones.

Re: Busted door glass

Do you guys think that $50 for a window from the junk yard is good or $265 for a new one? there is a 91 or 92 Firebird in the local junk yard and I snatched the RPO tag off of it I'll scan it and post it later in the restoration part of the forum maybe I can get some suggestions on what to take! Oh and i think I know where I'll be getting my window!

Re: Busted door glass

If the used glass has a tint to it the only thing is the color could be faded so yes buy the used. I get glass wholsale price and would still just pick up a used one.

Re: Busted door glass

Man...call me crazy, but if it were me, Ide rather get a door, leave it alone, and do a poor mans paint job on it just to make it look alittle better before i get a full paint job.

Swapping out the glass, then swapping it again later on just seems like more work than its worth. Is your car a show car otherwise??? If not, you could probably make the door look ok to the average person with some spray cans and $20 or so. Sand it down alittle, hit it with some primer, sand alittle, hit it with a few coats of color...nice coats. Then hit it with a bunch of clear. Wetsand, buff...and you can make it look pretty good.

Especially if you are thinking about getting paint reasonably soon. I could probably go a year or more with a home paint job on my door to avoid messing with glass swapping. Two hinges and some wires = better than rivets and sliders and big pieces of glass to adjust and mess with...

Just my opinion of course

J.

Lol swapping doors is a lot harder than just a simle door glass swap. I could do it in 10 minitues at the most.

Re: Busted door glass

The little plastic pieces that the rivets go thought are busted are I think that will propose a problem. Can I buy them or substitute them, what would you use to substitute them if the ones on the JY car don't come through.

Re: Busted door glass

The parts that I'm talking about are the white plastic washers that go on either side of the window glass where it rivits into the window track. They are about 1"-1.5" and about 3/16" thick. Thanks for your time.

Must have missed my point. He stated he had other problems with the door. Rot, busted mirror bits, and the glass... My point was, if he needs to replace the door anyway, and he is planning to repaint the car, why not swap the door and do a quick paint job on just the door for a temp thing. All the other problems are fixed, and he's good to go.

Oh...and sorry, but I gotta call bs on swapping the window glass in 10 minutes. Im talking door panel off, to window in and aligned, and door panel on. To me, swapping the entire door seems easier. Aligning it is the biggest pain, but with a buddy to help move/hold things, its not bad. I bet the whole door can be swapped in not much more than 10 minutes though...with the alignment good enough to shut.

Good luck with the fix mxcrazed!

J.

Re: Busted door glass

Well if he has to replace the door than yeah.. but if hes gonna have to swap the door back onto his old car then no it isn't worth the time. And I could do it in 5 minutes I do on average 4 aday for 4 years now.. I'm an auto glass tech

The plastic wash you can get at napa or somewhere like that or find something to go between the 2.
