Gonna paint my Camaro, need advice..
I just want to post a thread on a little project that I have been working on a little bit in the winter.
I have a 1987 Camaro SC that I have done some small changes on the body and suspension so now it looks more like a Z28.
When I bought the car it looked like this:

Now the car looks like this:

As you can see I have changed: front bumper, front gfx, rocker gfx, door-gfx and quarter gfx, and rear bumper.
I also have a brand new Z28 Hood with louvers in my garage that i am going to mount after I have painted it under.
Anyone here that has painted a Camaro?...I guess that was a dumb question but what the heck...
I need some advices how to do the paint job.
With the ground effects and bumpers mounted on??..
Any other thing that need to be removed??
This is going to be a DAILY driver and not a show car so I am not going to go crazy of all the sanding....
Now I have gone over the car by hand with 240grit paper all over the car...
It looks like this:

And I have some other questions to...
I have some rock chips on almost all of the car...They looks like this:

Very bad picture but you can see a lot of the small spots in the paint.
I see a lot of theese on my fenders and lower line of the doors....
What to do to fix this??...Do I have to sand everything down to bare metal?..And then fix it as a damage?..With primer, and then body butty and so on???...
Or will the filler fix this small spots???
My plan on painting my car is like this:
1. Wash whole car with silicone remover
2. Find every damage, and rust and mark them with a tape.
3. Sand every damage, scratch and rust with 100grit paper to bare metal
4. Put on Rust Killer from WURTH company
5. Use body putty on every scrath and other places that has been used rust killer
6. Sand all the putty down with 120grit and after that go over with 240 grit.
7.Wash the whole car again
8. Spray 2-3 coats with filler all over the car
9. Sand over the car with 600grit paper
10. Wash and paint
Is this a good plan or what??...I really need every advice I can get.
Hope you guys could help me. You can also PM me if you want
Thanks...

Re: Gonna paint my Camaro, need advice..
you don't seem too far off the mark mate - I would say it is WELL worth the time to remove bumpers and ground effects and paint them OFF the car, and re-assemble though.
I got backed into the other week and the fron valance separated from the bumper and cracked all the paint in the seems (sh*tty maaco paint job)...ins company say it's not their fault it was not done right and won't pay for most of the flaky paint to be fixed!
The choice of paint and clear is important, I would use an enamel paint, and 3 coats of clear.
3 good coats of clear will give u a great shine....I personally would even do 4 or 5 so later u can do a color sand if ur feeling up to it and ur car will look SICK!!

Yep, remove everything. Bumpers, spoilers, GFX, handles, trim... all of it. The job will turn out much nicer, even if it's not a show car, it will lessen the chance of paint chipping and peeling.
On areas where there is lots of rock chips, I would sand down the whole area and feather the paint back, rather than sanding/filling each individual chip.

Re: Gonna paint my Camaro, need advice..
Okay...Thanks a lot for the advice so far....
So then I have to use about 100grit paper and sand areas with rock chips down to bare metal?...And after that, prime the area and then use body putty to get to the same level as the rest of the paint, that is around that area??
Sounds OK to me
.....
I am going to remover only my front bumper cause it is no problem to paint all over the rear bumper since there are not many deep areas to paint in...

Re: Gonna paint my Camaro, need advice..
i wouldnt use enamel paint.....it might react with the either acrylic or urethane thats on it now.......id go base coat clear coat in the form of shop line base and rubber seal clear coat, as far as the rock chip spots go, get some 2 part putty for it....not the crappy red bondo stuff....(i think the good stuff is called "iceing"...........just some friendly advice dont even think about using bondo brand stuff, its more trouble than its worth, EVERCOAT is your best bet.....if you use cheap stuff you get cheap results. i dont know that id take the entire car apart, just the ground effects and maybe the fenders, when you go painting stuff at differnt times (especially when using a metalic paint) it doesnt match. I would take the wheels off and paint it on jack stands though....those wheels look shiney and new

Re: Gonna paint my Camaro, need advice..
Okay...I have already bought the paint from PPG. They mixed up some Base coat on the same color code that was before on my camaro. I have about 4 liters of that paint. This is regular paint that you mix with hardener and thinner. I don't know that much about paint and I don't know the english words so I just say regular base paint.
I think I would unmount the front bumper and do my first paint job there.
Then I would learn if I have done a good job all over the car or if it is too bad.
then after that I think I need to take the ground effects and paint them seperately.
when I am done with those parts I would go for the car. First I would put some filler on to cover most of the rock chips and fill out the scratches from the sanding. And after that I would sand over the car by hand with nicer grit..About 400-600 i think...After that I think I am ready for the RED stuff

If you do fill in the rock chips, 3M brand polyester glaze is pretty good stuff. I agree, don't get anything that actually has the "Bondo" name on it.

Ok...Sounds good...Thank you adriancamaro for the response...The car would look even nicer with the Z28 hood on.....
So I don't need to use primer all over the entire car?...Just places where this rock ships and bigger scratches is??...And after it has dried I put som simple black spray paint on all that places again and go over with sanding as you said????...

Re: Gonna paint my Camaro, need advice..
prime the whole car and mist flat black over the entire area primered, block sand with 180 until no black mist is present, fill any black mist spots that wont sand out til level prime again and water sand with 400 and then 600, after you do all that you are ready to spray base and if you got all "black mist" gone then you WILL have one striaght car. The primer will fill up the rock chips if you put it on thick enough........i like to think of primer as a spray-able body filler

Re: Gonna paint my Camaro, need advice..
hey, your doing a nice job man!!!, looks very nice, i doing the same thing has you are 84 camaro berlinetta, putting on z28 kit and fixing some body damage. I am almost done but would like to know about how much it costs in primer and paint products to do this car, i want to go with normal base coat, clear coalt. I don't mean like body filler and stuff, but everything you need for paint its self, activater, reducer, primer, etc..... About how much does it cost, i am not going in the high grade stuff their hehe. i'm expecting around 300-400$ maybe?

Re: Gonna paint my Camaro, need advice..
obviously cost would differ because yall are from different countries, heck different continents..........it all depends on the quality of paint though, ppg deltron will run you about $400 for base clear, shop line is about $200 its made by ppg

Re: Gonna paint my Camaro, need advice..
Now I have a new plan...I don't know much about painting cars but i was talking to a car-painter yesterday and he told me to remove ALL the old paint. Because this old paint from the 80's is now good painting. The new painting will hold only for a couple of months...But after that the paint will go off...
He was sure about this one cause he had painted a LOT of 80's american cars...Specially Camaro's.....
So now my plan was to use abrasive rondeller to remove the paint from the steel plates on my car...Everything except the front bumper, rear-bumper and ground effects...
Then I have my whole car down to bare metal and start from there with primer....I want to sand by hand the rest of the bumpers with something about 180grit paper to remove the old paint....
What to do after I get my car do bare metal??...Buy primer from PPG and spray all over the car??...Then after that spray filler all over the car??

Re: Gonna paint my Camaro, need advice..
if I were you I'd only take the paint off the bumpers where its spiderweb cracking other then that it should be find with the clear scuffed, as for the primer for all the bare metal I'd use an etching primer (seals the metal) then your other primer.
but I see no reason to remove the paint if theres no chipping or other adhesion problems...

Re: Gonna paint my Camaro, need advice..
There's certainly no need to remove the paint if it's not peeling off like a lot of 80's cars did. Red wasn't one of the big ones (grays and blues, mostly) and your paint doesn't look to be original from the pics.

Re: Gonna paint my Camaro, need advice..
from the pictures you posted, i can almost guarantee that that paint is not original, the reasons paint wont stick is either 1, it wasnt preped right, 2 its so thick that it tends to break.........unless your car has been painted like 4 or 5 times with just a scuff job i wouldnt do it..........its more work that doesnt need to be done, but if you are dead set on a bare metal repaint, take it down to bare metal, fill and sand all your dents, spray with epoxy primer, then spray with high build primer and block the whole car like i mention earlier...........etching primer has acid in it, it probably works well, i just didnt like the thought of dormant acid being present when i was spraying $200 dollar base coat, and then $250 clear coat.........epoxy primer seals just like etching and contains no acid
----------
oh, and to achieve super results make sure to armor all the entire car before you spray any paint...........

Re: Gonna paint my Camaro, need advice..
Ok...I dont want to remove my old paint anyway, since you guys told me.
I was talking to a paint shop close to where I live about 2 days ago and they said to me DON'T take the paint off...Just do like I am doing.
Fill the rock chips with body putty, and remove any rust on the car.
After that, spray filler/surfacer all over the car and start sanding over the car with water paper and 800grit. After that the Paint shop will spray over red color on my car. I have already bought paint and everything so the paint shop will just paint the car...
But paint is expensive here in norway
..
I have paid about: 1300dollars for 4litres with red color paint, 3 litres with clear coat and 4 litres with filler/surfacer.
I think it is a little bit expensive. The hardener and thinner also included in that price
